Contract awarded to build BART in Santa Clara County

That faint beep-beep in the distance is the sound of BART moving closer to Santa Clara County. The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority board voted Thursday to award a $772 million contract to extend BART 10 miles from Warm Springs to the Berryessa neighborhood in east San Jose. That leaves the start of construction on the $2.3 billion project just one step away, but it's a big step. The authority is counting on being awarded $900 million in federal funds that would be disbursed over several years. The Federal Transit Agency has given the project a recommended rating, and is expected to award a funding agreement in February.

2. VTA would need to tweak light rail a bit

as it is now, you'd have to get off BART at Milpitas, ride light rail to Tasman, then transfer to the train for Santa Clara. There's already talk of restoring a line that "crosses the T" directly from Milpitas and vicinity through Santa Clara, like they had years ago.
