Just say NO to prop 16
Stop PG&E's grab for total market control. Who do they think they are, the new ENRON?

1. I just got a flyer in the mail for YES ON 16
It had a big pretty picture of solar panels next to a crop of sunflowers. If I went by the picture, I would guess that a yes on 16 would finance alterative energy. But I know better.

2. Did I miss it?
I was looking for who paid for this ad but must have missed it. Once the same talking points were mentioned about government takeover of energy I knew.

3. $35 million of their rate-payers money!!!!!!!
Edited on Sun Apr-11-10 04:21 PM by Ernesto
..."By election day, the Northern California utility will have spent $35 million, maybe more, to buy its very own law, one that seeks to guarantee that PG&E would never lose an inch of turf to public utilities or whatever the next new thing is that rocks the energy world."....

5. Agreed. After reading the fine print on the eco-friendly looking mailer...
...I realized that it was a front for the the energy companies.

Sure couldn't tell that from the pretty pictures though. :(

6. LA Times::: No on 16
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 01:24 PM by Ernesto
..."PG&E is expected to pour $35 million into its campaign for the measure, which features commercials and glossy mailers so misleading that they could have been written by the Iranian information ministry. Calling the proposition the "Taxpayers Right to Vote" act (though it has little to do with taxpayers), the company's marketing mavens claim it would give voters a say on risky government decisions to enter the electricity generation business. In reality, it would only cement PG&E's monopoly — at ratepayers' expense."

8.  PG&E's campaign tactics are illegal, California regulators warn
Edited on Fri May-07-10 12:32 PM by Ernesto
...."California utility regulators Monday warned Pacific Gas & Electric Co. to stop using telephone and direct-mail tactics that could derail competition from the state's first nonprofit group to offer electric service.

The warning letter from the California Public Utilities Commission came in the midst of PG&E's $35-million campaign to pass Proposition 16, a statewide initiative on the June 8 ballot aimed at making it harder for local governments and citizens to form nonprofits to provide electricity."...

11. Well, I will be saying no
Because, like my dad and my uncle Nathan have done in the past, I'm going to line up all the propositions and vote no on every last one of them. The prop system in CA is a total joke and too marred by special interest and influence peddling. It needs to be abolished...but since that likely won't happen, pervasive rejection is my solution.

14. I got a pro-16 email a little while ago
It explains how Prop 16 Protects My Right to Vote!

I forwarded it to my Internet Service Provider as an abuse spam, and I also clicked my spam button.

It's so easy to see where these people are coming from. All you have to do is:

Take everything these people say
Figure out what the opposite of that statement is
Deduce that the opposite is really the real truth

On the crucial factor of price, SMUD's publicly posted electricity rates for residential customers are 30 percent lower on average than PG&E's.

On reliability, SMUD again tops PG&E.
Finally, for customers who care about the environment, SMUD relied on renewable energy for 22.2 percent of retail sales in 2009, compared with just 14.4 percent for PG&E.

19. Sac Bee opinion
1. Proposition 16 – This is nothing less than an attempt by Pacific Gas and Electric to lock its monopoly status into the state constitution. Public power agencies would face an incredibly high bar – a two-thirds vote – to expand service and offer cheaper rates to businesses and other customers in PG&E territory. If this initiative passes, it will affirm that would-be monopolies can use their wealth to effectively buy an election. Other corporations are watching and will be close behind them.
