Sad if True: Report: Body found in Chelsea King case
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 06:34 PM by Mike 03
This is a first report, so I would consider it likely (given the source) but unsubstantiated.

Excerpt:

Ending a long local search for the Poway teen, Chelsea King’s body was found in Lake Hodges at approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday, according to numerous local sources. There are unconfirmed reports of a knife found near the body, according to San Diego 6 CW

There are some serious questions that are going to need to be answered regarding this case.

I've never in my life seen a case quite like this in terms of announcements by authorities prior to locating a body.

More puzzling, if authorities had a surviving eyewitness account from a previous victim who escaped a similar attack that this suspect, now in custody, had committed assault and attempted rape in December of 2009, why was he free? He previously served five years of a six year sentence for sexual assault on a 13 year old girl.

Bizarre. But maybe there are plausible explanations.

1. This is a very sad story, but why is it getting so much coverage? Especially in SoCal?
Could it be because she has fair skin? Would a missing African American teenager have received this much coverage?

Likely not.

2. The disappearance shocked a community of good people - Candlelight vigil is taking place right now
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 08:38 PM by slackmaster
It got coverage because it affected a lot of people. Hundreds of people volunteered to search for her. People who thought their community was safe from that kind of tragedy. My mom, my stepbrother and his family, and a lot of people I know live in the area. My brother attended the same high school she did, many years ago. One of my best friends teaches at that school occasionally.

It's a shame you are trying to trivialize it because of the color of her skin. Shame on you. Think about how her family, her classmates, her neighbors are all feeling right now.

Chelsea King was a bright girl with a lot of potential. A lot of people knew her and cared about her. A lot of people in the area are very sad right now. It's a big story.

4. This is very tragic. Every hurt child is a tragedy.

I don't think asking why the media covers white girls and not black girls diminishes it. The little black girls deserve just as much attention and justice as the white girls do.

5. This is the kind of bullcrap that makes me hate DU sometimes
Edited on Tue Mar-02-10 08:45 PM by slackmaster
People won't post a story about a missing white girl because it inevitably leads to choruses of "They never cover missing black girls!"

This is a HUGE story if you live in the area, but there is almost no coverage on DU because of the reason I stated.

:argh:

6. Well I'm sure the mothers of all those missing black girls might just feel differently
Like I said it is a tragedy when any child is hurt. I can't imagine the pain the parents of this missing child must be feeling. I wouldn't know how to go on if I knew one of my children had been murdered.

7. I'm going to take a guess that mothers of missing black girls feel sympathy for Chelsea's family
Just like everyone who isn't wrapped up in self-loathing political correctness does.

8. Of course they do. Just as you find it insulting that anybody dare bring up the subject
of missing black girls I find it offensive that you think that we don't care about Chelsea just because we bring up the plight of missing black girls. You don't know me. I have repeated over and over I do feel for Chelsea's family. My heart breaks for them. But you don't care how many times people offer their condelences. You just want to judge them because they care about what happens to all the missing children not just some of them.

9. I think it's perfectly fine to bring up the subject
Just not right now in this context.

It's tacky, tasteless, vulgar, insensitive, thoughtless.

I find it offensive that you think that we don't care about Chelsea

I didn't say you didn't care, and for the record I never thought that for a moment.

10. And I didn't say you didn't care about Chelsea
So let's just drop it okay? We are all heartbroken for Chelsea's family just as we are all heartbroken for all missing and murdered children, but I won't shy away from the subject just because some find it tacky. We need the media's attention on all missing and exploited children.

11. Chelsea...

...and middle eastern kids turned to bits by our rockets and weapons.

No difference in tragedy.

Equal weight, equal pain in my opinion.
