We Draw the Lines
Just received this email from my state senator and thought it might be of interest here.

Help Draw California's Political Lines

Every 10 years, California must redraw the boundaries for its State Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization districts. This year, that responsibility will be in the hands of the people for the first time.

Why is this important?

Californians Made It Happen - Californians voted for this in 2008 and should take advantage of the historic event.

Unprecedented Opportunity - For the first time in our State's history, ordinary citizens will draw the lines for State Senate, Assembly, and Board of Equalization districts.

Momentous Chance - Californians have the chance to serve on the nation's first redistricting commission made up of independently selected citizens.

Fair Representation - You can help provide fair representation for all Californians and make sure your community voice is heard. California State Auditor Elaine Howle, who oversees the commission's creation, expressed concern that the current pool of applicants is disproportionately older white males. She is eager to see the state's diversity better reflected in the applicant pool.

Members will be paid $300 for each day of work and reimbursed for travel and other related expenses. Much like jury duty, no employer may fire, threaten to fire, or retaliate against any employee for serving on the commission.

The application process is open to every registered California voter who has had the same political affiliation for the last five years, and who has voted in at least two of the last three statewide general elections. The application deadline is February 12, 2010. To learn more, call (866) 356-5217 or visit www.wedrawthelines.ca.gov.

Sincerely,

Senator Christine Kehoe
