Man gets 6 months for pummeling dog to death
Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

(09-22) 12:35 PDT BURLINGAME -- A man who beat his girlfriend's small dog to death pleaded no contest today to animal cruelty and was sentenced to six months in county jail.

Ryan Reeser, 27, attacked a 6-year-old miniature pinscher named Godiva on Nov. 20, 2008, punching the 7-pound dog numerous times in the face, said Steve Wagstaffe, San Mateo County's chief deputy district attorney.

--------------------------------------------------

Reeser's motive for the attack wasn't known, other than that he had been angry at his girlfriend and the dog, said Assistant District Attorney Karen Guidotti.

6 years would be more like it.

6 months is nothing.

7. That he got any jail time at all is surprising.
More would've been better, but I've seen people like this get no jail time at all.

That poor dog.

21. Sidebar on the lilnk you pasted says otherwise
"One of the most distubring videos ever, but thanks to all of your outrage it has just been learned the Marine who threw the puppy has been expelled and the others disciplined. Warning- Disturbing"

Snopes.com concurs, though the Marine Corps did not specify exactly what the charges were. Also, Snopes lists the video as undetermined since there is the possibility that the actual throwing was faked. http://www.snopes.com/photos/military/throwpuppy.asp

as i stated for the OP - 6 months is not enough time for this type of crime, does not matter if you are civilian / military / alien / dolphin.

Enjoy prison. I hope this incident follows you everywhere you go.

Part of his sentence should be that he's banned from ever owning or being around animals ever again.

14. We need a national animal cruelty registry, like with sex offenders
I know many pet stores that keep pictures of animal hoarders and other problem owners. We should do that nationwide.

37. The rescue transport groups I'm on all list people who shouldn't be allowed to transport, overnight
or adopt due to prior issues. But yes, there needs to be a more wide-scale effort to do something similar.

And for people who wonder why screenings for adoption are so annoying and invasive, this sort of thing (to say nothing of the Bill Frist scenario and bunchers who take in animals to sell to labs) is why.

If someone hurt one of my birds I would have no problem skinning him alive. If no one wanted to do it, we wouldn't need to make it illegal.

42. Poor dog! What a horrible way to die!
And he only got 6 months? Where's the justice in that?

He beat the dog until it bled to death. Not a quick death (like that would make it easier?!?), but a long, drawn out death, laying there suffering.

If he will beat an innocent dog like that because he is angry at his girlfriend, he will use violence again.

If he would do that to a dog imagine what he would do to a person. Personally I thinkit is a little worse to hurt a tiny innocent creature like a small dog. I hope he rots in hell with the asshole who abandoned my puppy(I took her in) on the porch in the 100+ summer Texas heat
