1. I believe there was a large settlement somewhere near Ontario. . .
Yes, here's an article on it. . .

http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stories/PE_News_Local_D_tentcity28.2915a96.html

Though the article is dated December 2007, the problem of lost homes and unemployed families has only grown in the months since. This encampment was broken up by the police in March 2008:

And one of a series of YouTube videos on the problem. . .

Perhaps you can find other articles about this situation.

5. I live in Fresno
and I don't live in a tent. Neither do any of my friends friends or family. I do, however, make it a point to bring food directly to the homeless on a regular basis. You? Assbite!

6. When I drove by this morning the Tent Cities off of Hywy 4
were there along the creek just outside of Concord City proper. On my drive home they were all gone. Everything was gone, not even any scraps or remnants, it was as if they were never there.

'Oprah' features Sacramento in focus on homeless

The Associated Press
Posted: 02/25/2009 12:06:47 PM PST

SACRAMENTO—Sacramento homeless advocates are hoping an "Oprah Winfrey Show" segment featuring the city this week will prompt more donations and government help.

The segment airing Wednesday includes interviews with homeless families at Sacramento shelters and at a sprawling tent city where hundreds of people sleep each night.

Shelters here have been overwhelmed because of the sour economy.

St. John's shelter director Michele Steeb turns away more than 230 women and children each day—nearly triple the number from last year. Many have never been homeless before.

Joan Burke, director of Loaves & Fishes, which also provides homeless services, says Winfrey's producers contacted her group and said they singled out Sacramento because of its high number of home foreclosures and its growing homeless population.
