Napa Valley Register endorses McPalin
NAPA VALLEY REGISTER, 10-13-08

In the hurly-burly of a presidential campaign, voters can get caught up in distractions from attack ads to zingers delivered during debates.

We must not forget that we are hiring for the most important job in the nation, and that the basis for our decision must be which candidate will best execute the Office of the President of the United States and preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

In the view of the Register, that candidate is Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

McCain has the experience and the ability to lead this country in a time of enormous challenges and uncertainty, and his policy proposals in several areas are superior to those of his dynamic rival, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

A real head-scratcher. This part of wine country overwhelmingly supports a Democratic ideology. Local reaction to this endorsement has been quite negative.

The Napa Valley Register is owned by Lee Enterprises, Inc., of Davenport Iowa. Lee owns several papers in small to medium-sized markets.

1. Are you kidding me? Read "The Far Side of Eden" or "Napa" by Conaway
or the Robert Mondavi biography and you'll understand why the press acts as they do.

There may be popular support for Democratic causes in the valley but the people with the dough are still republicans.

4. The Register is behind Thompson (D) for Congress and other local Democrats
They've almost always supported Democratic candidates except for * in 2004. And there are big Democratic bucks up here.

Don't be mislead by Conaway's sensational account of Napa Valley.

2. in Napa county I see pro-Obama bumperstickers everywhere. . .
but we're all still stuck with a red-state newspaper, that endorsed George Bush and now John McCain.

3. Of all the major U.S. newspaper publishers, Lee is probably most like Wal-Mart
Particularly since they bought Pulitzer three years ago, they're well-known in the business for their terrible treatment of employees.

I had a friend who was on the copy desk at the Waterloo-Cedar Falls (Iowa) Courier, a Lee paper. She couldn't wait to get out of there and is now at the Wichita (Kan.) Eagle, a McClatchy paper. (McClatchy has one of the best reps in the business for fair employee practices, though they've been cutting a lot of jobs in the past couple of years.)
