Sacramento area Republicans seek Slavic support

In a windowless conference room at the Sacramento Republican Headquarters, veteran GOP activist Fred Hildebrand declared, "We need the help of the Slavic community."

Hildebrand was recruiting several dozen former Soviet refugees, including pastors and entrepreneurs, to help close the gap between presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama in California. A Field Poll released this week showed McCain- Palin down 16 points, after trailing by more than 20 in July.

"The Russians here can make a difference," Hildebrand said, referring to an estimated 70,000 California voters from the former USSR who tend to lean right.
