Parents say church trying to recruit kids
Parents say church trying to recruit kids

LODI -- Some parents from Millswood Middle School are accusing a neighboring church of using sweets to actively recruit students heading home from campus.

The First Baptist Church on North Mills Avenue has set up a tent out front where members have offered candy and information to students walking by.

"The kids are coming off site, and they are a captive audience to sell to," parent Stephen Perrin said. "It's like shooting ducks in a barrel."

The parents' concerns also touch upon the often close but delicate working relationship public schools have with churches.

Perrin believes First Baptist overstepped its bounds.

"Other parents say other things were being passed out -- information about the church and its activities," he said. "To me, that is recruiting."

1. Not only that, but they are trying to indoctrinate our children in school.
By trying to force creationism to be taught and have students participate in prayers!

Sounds exactly like what they accuse gays of doing.

2. Baptists have a goal of baptizing 1 million by a certain date
This is why I left the Baptist church. They don't worry so much about the individual soul. They want the masses. There is something very wrong with that, IMHO.

5. Reminded About Kids Not To Accept Candy From Strangers
It has always been good for parents to advise their children not to accept candy or anything from strangers. I would think that that applies here.

7. Some kind of church (I think presbyterian) does that here
or at least they used to at my middle school in South OC. Since I went to high school I haven't seen it done.
