MATHER, Calif. (AP) - Terrorists are likely to attack California because they're jealous of the state, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger asserted Friday as he reviewed California's first statewide terrorism drill.
"We've seen from 9/11 terrorism is something that no longer happens on the other side of the world," Schwarzenegger said while visiting the Office of Emergency Services command center. "We are living in a state that is the number one place in the world ... This is why people are jealous. This is why people want to hurt us."
California is participating in simultaneous drills with Virginia, under a Department of Defense exercise dubbed "Determined Promise 2004." The practice run is designed to find out how far federal, state and local authorities have come in their response preparations since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.
California's "Golden Guardian Full-Scale Excercise" simulated several incidents Thurdsay, including a radioactive "dirty bomb" exploding at the Port of Los Angeles, a pipe bomb discovered and dismantled at San Francisco International Airport and three terrorists discovered during routine security checks at Oakland Airport before they could hijack a plane.
