AhNo to veto gay marriage bill

By Jim Christie

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said on Wednesday he will veto a bill to allow gay marriage in the state and said the issue should be decided by the courts or by voters directly but not by the Democrat-controlled legislature.

A veto had been widely expected after California's Assembly on Tuesday endorsed gay marriage, the first time a state legislature had taken such a step. California's Senate passed the bill last week.

Schwarzenegger's press secretary, Margita Thompson, said the governor "believes that gay couples are entitled to full protection under the law and should not be discriminated against based upon their relationship."

But since California voters approved a ballot measure five years ago defining marriage as between a man and a woman, the question of gay marriage should be put to voters again in a referendum or decided by courts, she said.

1. that guy really forgets who he governs
Hello...San Francisco and L.A.! And the enormous entertainment industry, run by the remaining strong Unions in this country (which, though they made him his fortune, he has now decided not to support)

You know, I have to say though...we all voted for a movie star, and thought it would somehow work out. At least he won't be running for pres.

:puke:

That'll raise his poll numbers!! :sarcasm:

I wish there were a remote island somewhere that we could
put all these effing neocons on and let them live it up. And
let us get on with normal life.

(It'd be reminiscent of "Lord of the Flies" I bet!!)

3. It's time to terminate the Governator
Schwarzenegger has tried to pass himself off as a centrist, but I think this veto shows his true colors. I have already signed up to do some phone banking to defeat some of his ballot measures. I would have given him props if he had the guts to stand up for what was right, but now I'll truly enjoy watching his ballot measures and approval ratings go down.

4. AAAAAAA-MEN, Pushed. He's cut from the same cloth as the
others. Some say he's not as bad-- probably just a matter of
degree. But he's the antithesis of what the Kennedys believe
in. It's no secret Maria's brothers can't stand him.

5. Field says...
Poll: Most voters not inclined to re-elect Schwarzenegger

56 percent would not support him, 36 percent would.

Note that the poll was taken before he said he'd veto AB849.

6. He's politically smart sometimes.
He's poll numbers are in the toilet so he's looking for a "culture war" issue to get the white trash vote fired up for him. Gay marriage has proven time and again an issue which energizes the religious right and the red neck class so it just might do the same again. Arnies no doubt counting on it.

8. What works in red states might not work in Culefonia though
Polls in NY state show the majority already supports gay marriage, surely California isn't that far off?
