Umberg quietly quits Reserve

The assemblyman resigned just after admitting affair.

By JOHN GITTELSOHN
The Orange County Register

Tom Umberg, a Democrat representing central Orange County in the Assembly, resigned as a colonel from the Army Reserve days after he admitted to an extramarital affair.

(snip)

On June 23, Umberg admitted to a four-year extramarital affair, an indiscretion that military legal experts said could lead to the loss of his security clearance and force his retirement. The Army's Personnel Security manual lists sexual misconduct, including "Adultery that is recent, frequent, and likely to continue and has an adverse effect on good order or discipline," as grounds for revoking security clearances.

(snip)

His most recent active duty – from August to December last year while he was a candidate for the Assembly – was serving on a team that prosecuted terrorism suspects.

In his absence, his campaign indicated that Umberg was working in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where the suspects are detained. But a Register investigation found that he spent only about 16 days of his four-month tour of duty there. The investigation also reported that Umberg lived in Villa Park, outside his district, rather than at the Santa Ana condominium where he is registered to vote.

(snip)

Umberg's military service was touted in campaign flyers that showed photos of him in uniform and fundraising appeals that cited his service in Guantanamo.

1. So adultery will get you out.
. . . sexual misconduct, including "Adultery that is recent, frequent, and likely to continue and has an adverse effect on good order or discipline," as grounds for revoking security clearances.

It's nice to know there are still standards in the military. :sarcasm:

2. Was it worth it?
Be faithful.

I could not look my kids in the eyes if I were to cheat on the mother of my children. Ugh.
