Volunteers balancing good will, cost of gas

As gas prices continue to climb, people who donate their time -- and mileage -- to drive for local charities are feeling the pinch.

But most volunteers are still running up the odometer -- at least for now.

Some nonprofit groups organize rides for senior citizens and disabled people who need a lift to doctor's appointments or the grocery store. Volunteers often use their own vehicle to ferry the people about or to do shopping for them.

Some volunteers travel as far as Livermore or the Bay Area to take people to medical appointments. And with gas prices near $2.50 a gallon, being benevolent is harder on the budget.

1. I'm in another part of the country

but I actually did have to scale back on Hospice volunteer work due to gas prices. I have to make a 60+ mile round trip just to get to the town the Hospice office is located, then more to see the families and patients. It's a worthwhile cause, but I simply cannot afford to do it as it should be done. I'm sure this is affecting others as well and the costs to all volunteer endeavors will be huge (that includes the faithbased ones George).
