Ark. woman charged with running over her own mom
Source: AP

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - A woman with a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit for driving backed over her mother and left the scene even though loved ones yelled, "You killed grandma," police said.

Lisa Ann Casteel, 40, was charged with negligent homicide and driving while intoxicated. She was booked Wednesday in the May 17 accident and released on $3,000 bond.

Sheriff's deputies were told by witnesses that Casteel backed over her mother, Mary Jane Donn, 56, as Donn sat in a plastic chair in the driveway of a home where relatives had gathered, according to an arrest affidavit.

Casteel's sister, Michelle, told the deputies that Casteel thought her Chevrolet Blazer was in drive, not reverse, according to the affidavit.

Witness Michael Carey, who was named in the affidavit, said the group was at his house. He said people in the yard yelled "You killed grandma" at Casteel. Casteel got out of her SUV, checked on her mother, said she was breathing and drove off, the affidavit said.

3. Do you suppose that's an example of the theory that drinking
impair your judgment? "she's still breathing", no harm, no foul!

2. $3,000 bail? Jeebus....
I had to put up $5,000 a few years ago in Houston, and I didn't even run over anyone.

4. Before I clicked on the thread, I thought it might have been intentional. It used to be that...
the different manners of killing a person dictated the respectability of the act. For example, a sword was a brave and fine way to kill somone, a dagger was questionable, poison was a weapon of true wimps. I think running people down with your car brings it to a new low.

6. And?
I was 20 when I had my kid. If I were to get run over 40 years later, it'd take a real asshat to bring that up, as if it meant something.

8. I'm just saying it's an inappropriate thing to bring up.
Parents of all ages have kids who wind up alcoholics, and even if being the child of a teenage mother was hard on the kid, she's 40 now and certainly should be responsible for her own actions.

That the lady who died horribly was a teenage mother back in the sixties doesn't really have to do with anything, and it's pretty disrespectful to bring it up as if it did.

9. I don't understand what is wrong with people. the two have nothing to do
with each other, unless of course you're somehow feelign guilty about something.

it would be nice if you laid off now.

10. You're the one who brought up the dead woman's age at motherhood. It was rude and inappropriate.
You really should apologize.

13. Well I guess the mother could have had an abortion since she was only 16 yrs old and pregnant
It's not the mother's fault that the her 40 yr old daughter was drunk

22. Pepperbear, you know your point was tacky...
...learn a little good taste, why don't ya. Or better yet, just an ounce of empathy. This was a tragedy, and you point out the fact that the victim was a teenage mother years ago? That's some pretty obnoxious behavior on your part, and you know it.

23. Gentle Giant, what if your mother got killed in that fashion?
<soapbox>
How would you feel if you logged on to Democratic Underground and found that people were ridiculing your DEAD mother for being a mom at 16? Some people on this site can be very very cruel at times. I'm from Arkansas, my mom had me when she was young and she suffered from addiction for years. How many other former or current Arkansas residents have read this mean-spirited exchange and left feeling completely revolted by people like PepperBear and Gentle Giant?!? Just because the victim is a former teenage mother from Arkansas doesn't make her any less deserving of understanding and compassion. And as much as we all hate SUVs, your comment was callous and cruel.
</soapbox>
