Protest of Joe Arpaio leads to suspension of most jail visits
Source: azcentral.com (Arizona Republic)

A planned national protest of Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's policies
has prompted the department to suspend visitations at most county jails for
24 hours this weekend, officials said.

People visiting inmates in the Durango complex, including Tent City, Estrella,
Durango, and Lower Buckeye jails, are expected to be turned away between
7 a.m. Saturday and 7 a.m. Sunday, according to a statement released by the sheriff's office.

And to counter noise from the protest, Tent City officials planned to play music
over the jail's announcement system, the statement said.

The demonstration was expected to attract between 7,000 and 20,000 protestors,
sheriff's officials said. Protest organizers planned to march from Phoenix's Falcon Park
to Tent City between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Arpaio Forces Woman to Give Birth While Shackled
The news team for Telemundo 52 recently reported on Alma Minerva Chacon, a women who was terrorized by Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Unfortunately, she is just the latest in a long line of Latinos who have suffered at the hands of the ruthless Sheriff whose personal goal is to rid Arizona of all "illegals" and just maybe, all Latinos. Arpaio has repeatedly stated that he is breaking no laws and just enforcing the constitution by arresting more than 600 Latinos a year. But the problem with his tactics is that less than half of those arrested are even in this country illegally.

The most recent atrocity committed by the self-proclaimed "America's Toughest Sheriff" involves a woman who was detained while 9-months pregnant. Alma Minerva Chacon's case has been receiving media attention due to the brutality with which she was treated. The very same night of her arrest, Chacon went into labor and found herself afraid and alone, being rushed to a local hospital with her hands and legs chained in shackles.

Once she reached the hospital, nurses repeatedly begged the Sheriff's staff to allow them to unchain the mother, but they refused and Chacon was forced to give birth while still shackled to the bed. At one point, the nurse asked for them to release her so that she could be escorted to the bathroom for a urinalysis, but even that request was denied. But the worst came once Chacon gave birth to her baby girl.

Still chained to the bed, Arpaio's police staff refused to allow Chacon to hold her newborn baby and then warned her that if no one came to pick up the child within 72 hours, she would be turned over into state custody. Telemundo 52 sat down with Chacon and let her tell her side of the story. 9. You know, I hope, that I did not mean to infer everyone there is proud of him
but obviously, as you no doubt know all too well from living there, he does have many supporters . This particular story about the pregnant woman may be the single most disgusting thing I've ever heard about him and his dept.

6. I'll be at the march!!!
I so hope they are right about the number of protesters. We're lucky to get a couple of hundred people together for a war protest, even at the height of the Iraq clusterf*ck.

12. Arpaio wants to charge undocumented immigrants with state felony chages
Arpaio unit arrests 20 suspected undocumented immigrants
by Jolie McCullough - Jan. 20, 2010 05:15 PM
The Arizona Republic
Twenty suspected undocumented immigrants were arrested Wednesday after two vehicles were pulled over on two Arizona highways for alleged speeding, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said.

At about 2 p.m., a smuggling unit pulled over a van with 12 people inside on Arizona 87 near Bush Highway. Several passengers admitted to being smuggled into the United States, Sheriff Joe Arpaio said.

Shortly thereafter, the same unit stopped an SUV on Interstate 17 near New River and found eight more suspected illegal immigrants, one of whom was hiding in the vehicle, Arpaio said.

All 20 are in custody and could face state felony charges, Arpaio added.
