Cesar Chavez Monday on KXCI
Exploring the Legacy of César Chávez

KXCI 91.3-FM Special Programming: Monday, March 31, 2008, 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Arizonan César E. Chávez was a second generation American born in Yuma on March 31, 1927. Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa, he and Dolores Huerta organized farm workers throughout California; fighting for better working conditions, against low wages and for just treatment of workers by striking, boycotting and marching for the United Farm Workers Union. César E. Chávez died peacefully in his sleep on April 23, 1993 in in San Luis, Arizona.

On Monday, March 31, Tucson's community radio, KXCI 91.3-FM will observe the legacy of César Chávez, who continues to provide inspiration to millions worldwide.

From 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., KXCI will feature interviews with local educators, community leaders and activists as well as historical segments from Tucson Unified School District students. These local voices will be woven through a blend of border music; featuring selections from the United Farm Workers’ movement, soulful sounds of that turbulent time period and contemporary socially relevant songs.

Ernesto Portillo Jr., host of Onda Suave, will kick off the day's programming at 7 a.m. with live interviews and live music, and prerecorded interviews. The programming continues throughout the day, including Democracy Now at noon. Bobby Diaz, host of The Chicano Connection, will complete the day when he hosts the program beginning at 3 p.m. with a live musical presentation by Los Cuatro Vientos. The historical struggles of César Chávez are still relevant today and many people in our border community continue to be inspired by his work.

KXCI airs locally at 91.3-FM and webstreams at www.KXCI.org.
