1. They make Bush look like a flaming liberal
Franks is a right-wing nutjob fundamentalist so extreme that moderate Repugs have challenged him in the primary. Thank God I don't live in that part of the state.

Flake is, as his name implies, a flake. He is one of the 11 who voted against aid for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. When he breaks with the party line, it is usually to stake out a position to the right of right, or for some peculiar reasoning only he understands. He represents Mesa, one of the most conservative cities in America.

Both of them make JD Hayworth, another Arizona embarassment, look positively moderate. Save your energy. (Of course, I suppose you could tell them that Jesus told you that Bush needs to be impeached. That's the only thing that's going to work in their cases.)

2. Jesus doesn't have cabinet positions and SCOTUS appointments
to offer, though, so why bother with Him? I don't think even telling them Jesus said it would matter.

Now, if W said W needed to be impeached, they might listen.

They are both BushBots of the very worst kind.

I don't even bother with them (as you say, a waste of energy).

The only time they are worth my time is re-election campaigns--to stop them (sigh).

3. Flake is my rep.
He's Mormon.
He doesn't answer my emails.

Mesa is the 13th most conservative community in the US right now.

From his website:
Jeff Flake, presently serving his third term in Congress, represents the Sixth Congressional District of Arizona. This district includes parts of Mesa and Chandler and all of Gilbert, Queen Creek, and Apache Junction. Jeff serves on the Committee on the Judiciary, the Committee on International Relations and the Committee on Resources.

Jeff is a fifth-generation Arizonan, born and raised on a ranch in Snowflake, Arizona (the town was named, in part, after Jeff's great-great grandfather). After serving a Mormon mission in southern Africa, Jeff graduated from Brigham Young University, where he received a B.A. in International Relations and an M.A. in Political Science. More importantly, it was at BYU that Jeff met his wife, Cheryl.

In 1987, Jeff started his career at a public affairs firm in Washington, D.C. Soon thereafter, Jeff moved to the southern African nation of Namibia. As the Executive Director of the Foundation for Democracy, a foundation monitoring Namibia's independence process, he saw the nation usher in freedom and democracy.

In 1992, Jeff and his family moved back to Arizona where he was named Executive Director of the Goldwater Institute. In this role, Jeff worked to promote a conservative philosophy of less government, more freedom, and individual responsibility.

Jeff and Cheryl have been married 20 years and live in Mesa with their five children.

4. F&F
Franks is a religious right guy and a former Evan Mecham crony. His hot button issues are anti-abortion and pro-school vouchers. A pure old-school Falwellite.

Flake is more of a libertarian than a conservative. He breaks with his party and votes liberal on civil liberties and homeland security issues but otherwise is a hardcore fiscal conservative.

If you're writing about environmental issues, I'd expect that they are both hostile to the environmental movement.

5. Very hard-core fiscal conservative
He voted against the Katrina relief. As appalling as that seems, it's in keeping with his ideology. Despite the fact that his beliefs are mostly at odds with mine, I've got a grudging respect for the guy. He's not just a Chimp sockpuppet like Hayworth.
