Stevens declines questions

A day after state election officials threw out the recall against him, Senate President Ben Stevens declared he was being victimized by "personal attacks" at a brief press conference held at a South Anchorage park.

Stevens declined to answer most questions, including one central to the recall effort -- what work he did for the $195,000 he was paid for consulting fees and business services by the oil field service company Veco.

"I don't have to say that," Stevens said. He said his disclosure reports had been ruled adequate by the Alaska Public Offices Commission staff and he wasn't required to do any more.

After six minutes at a podium set up on the grass at Jewel Lake Park, Stevens walked away with questions still coming his way.
