"Anchorage, Alaska - A worker at the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge in Cooper Landing was injured today when she was attacked by a bear on her way to work.

According to Alaska State Troopers, 21-year-old Danielle Compton of Valley Springs, Calif., was walking from employee housing to the lodge when the attack occurred. The woman suffered puncture wounds to her leg when the bear, which she describes as a brown bear, attacked and tried to drag her into the woods.

Department of Fish and Game biologist Rick Salinger says he is unsure why the bear attacked. He found no sign of the bear when he searched the area.

The woman was taken to Central Peninsula General Hospital, where she was treated and released"

update from adn

"According to Walgenbach, as Compton walked down a driveway from her door, she would have passed on her left a "pretty thick patch of woods" that extend down to the river. A little farther on the left is an RV park and the lodge's general store, and still farther and up a hill is the lodge, Walgenbach said.

"From what I understand, the bear came from that patch of woods on her left side," he said.

Compton was 50 to 100 feet from the employee housing and about the same distance from the RV park when the attack occurred, Michels said.

The woman is 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds, according to Greg Wilkinson, a troopers spokesman in Anchorage. When she first saw the bear, she yelled at it and waved her arms, Wilkinson said.

"The bear charged, knocked her over, she kicked him in the chest and hit the bear in the nose and eyes," he said. "The good news is that he bit her leg, picked her up, but she kicked him until he dropped her."

5. Cleofus, does it seem to you that the bears

are becoming a little more assertive than they used to be? I don't remember all these bear attacks so close to civilization back in the old days.

6. yes
i'm no expert...but i think craig medred wrote an article in adn saying pretty much the same thing. but i think he was talking about a specific place...

but since more people are up here...the bears are getting used to us and are not avoiding us as they used too...familiarity breeds contempt...
