Tourist Info needed
Hello, BamaDUers!

Say, I might be headed down to B-Ham in late October for a Nat'l Lawyers Guild conference. Any recommendations about sites to see, victuals to savor, etc.?

You might want to check out the Civil Rights Institute. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens are nice if you like flowers. There's also the Alabama Jazz Hall Of Fame. If you're a sports fan, come on down to Tuscaloosa to check out the Paul W. Bryant Museum, and be sure to try the barbecued ribs at the original Dreamland. Bama plays in Tuscaloosa on October 16 against Southern Mississippi. And if you have time, head on down to Gulf Shores. There are some nice beaches down there, and the National Shrimp Festival is in October, I think. That's always a lot of fun.

Oh yeah, and Bill Maher is doing a show in Birmingham. I can't remember the date, but I think it's in late October.

The Highlands Bar And Grill is probably the best restaurant in Birmingham, but it's fairly expensive. Entrees are between $25-$30, I think. Appetizers are around $10-$12. There's an Italian place called Carnaggio's that I've only been to once, but I liked it and it's not too expensive.

ON EDIT: I didn't know this. Highlands was picked by Gourmet magazine as the 5th best restaurant in the country. And their chef Frank Stitt was named the best chef in the southeast by the James Beard foundation.

and sample the ribs or butt at Archibald's. Forget Dreamland, Archibald's has it beat. But be sure and get instsructions on how to get there, or you never will find it.
