The Alabama Democratic Conference endorses Clinton

The Alabama Democratic Conference at 2:30 p.m. suspended its rules and by acclamation endorsed U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton for the presidency.

Clinton was warm in her thanks to ADC members for their support and especially to its longtime chairman Joe Reed. She praised Reed as a leader who has made a difference in the lives of working Alabamians.

Clinton was accompanied by U.S. Rep. John Lewis, D-Ga., a long-serving member of Congress who endorsed Clinton in Georgia yesterday.

“I consider our endorsement process as the first caucus in the nation,” said Dr. Joe Reed, president of the Alabama Democratic Conference. “The candidate that wins the ADC endorsement will go a long way to ensure a primary victory not only in Alabama, but in other states as well.”



Reed said key members of the ADC talked to Sen. Barack Obama, who is also seeking the presidential nomination, at mid-week. The Illinois Democrat called to explain that he wanted to be at the ADC meeting but needed instead to campaign in Iowa.

Clinton coming to Alabama

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is scheduled to speak at the Alabama Democratic Conference in Montgomery Saturday.

The organization, which is known as one of the nation's oldest and most powerful black Democratic groups, also plans this weekend to endorse a candidate to support in the race for president in 2008.

All Democratic candidates have been invited and Clinton, a Democratic Senator from New York, has agreed to be the keynote speaker, said Joe Reed, chairman of the Alabama Democratic Conference.

"I consider the ADC endorsement process as the first caucus in the nation, the first test for candidates with voters that will determine how Alabama will vote," Reed said. "The candidate that wins the ADC endorsement will go a long way to ensure a primary victory not only in Alabama, but in other states as well."

Alabama's primary is Feb. 5, which it shares with other Southern states, including Arkansas, Georgia, and Tennessee.

Alabama, as a pivotal state in the South, is shaping up to be an important battleground for the nomination of both parties. Early endorsements from political groups and public figures are sought, as the candidates try to gain traction in the state.


The Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC), one of the nation’s oldest and most powerful black Democratic organizations, is holding their annual conference in Birmingham on October 12-13, where members from across the state will decide on an endorsement for a presidential candidate. The ADC endorsement has been a reliable predictor of who will eventually become the Democratic Party’s nominee.
