Alabama's Birmingham Post-Herald final edition on Friday, 23 Sep 05
"The Birmingham Post-Herald will publish its final edition on Friday, Sept. 23, The E.W. Scripps Co., owner of the newspaper, announced today."

That's really sad news.

1. Wonder if the literacy scores in the state are correlated to this?
Nahhh, must be a coincidence.

2. The Herald published a number of editorials and LTTE on liberal issues.
It will be missed.

10. the Anniston Star is probably bigger than the Post-Herald
The Birmingham News is far larger than the Post-Herald was at the end. The Post-Herald circulation (or subscriber base; I've heard it both ways) was down to only 7,500, compared to about 100,000 at it's peak.

The Post-Herald was, marginally, the more liberal paper in the 'Ham, but that wasn't the reason for it's decline. It's downfall began when it switched to an afternoon publishing schedule. Afternoon papers just don't work in this country anymore. And the days of the morning paper are probably numbered as well.

I hope the News picks up a few columnists from the P-H. James Evans, the minister from Auburn, was always a breath of fresh air when it came to matters of religion and faith. That Stallworth guy was good when he applied his fervor for nostalgia to current events. And guiltily I admit, Scott Adamson's tales of his "canine son, Otis" usually made me chuckle (even though Adamson clearly had a vendetta for the Tide).

So I'm sad to see the Post-Herald go too. But it's not really surprising.

Good wishes to you!

6. I saw your comment "men who want crops without plowing" but
I thought "no till" farming was environmentally sound?

:hi:

7. the comment is more of a metaphor, although
no till farming is environmentally friendly, it's also very limited in the the types of soil and crops that are suited for for it. as a rule, sooner or later you're gonna hafta bust some sod and turn some earth.

11. The Post-Herald failed
because nobody bought it.

It's circulation was down below 7,000.

You could not even rely on the PH to give you high school football scores in Saturday morning's paper.

A newspaper that can't give you sports scores is doomed.
