Go to Church or the Devil Will Get You
I posted this in GD and it got a big yawn. I guess you have to be from Alabama to understand the significance of that sign.

The fact that it has been replaced by a Lucy Baxley sign is just amazing.

Well-Known Billboard Replaced with Baxley Campaign Sign

Several potential candidates for governor continue to remain coy about their political intentions. But Democratic Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley is making it no secret that she's actively pursuing the state's highest office.

A large red and white sign proclaiming Baxley's candidacy has replaced one of the state's most famous billboards on Interstate 65 north of Montgomery. For years, a large billboard beside a man-made lake on the edge of I-65 north of Prattville has urged motorists to "Go to church or the devil will get you." That billboard has been replaced with a large sign that says "We Love Lucy."

The sign is on property owned by Montgomery road builder W.S. Newell. The property includes two pristine, man-made lakes and for years the "Go to church ..." sign stood by one lake. Newell said Tuesday he put up the new sign to show his support for Baxley.

1. Wow, they really stick with the timeless classics in Alabama, eh?
If Hellfire and brimstone was good enough for our grandparents, it's damned well good enough for us!

2. It's got me wondering...
Suppose a right-wing Bible Belt candidate, we'll call him Berle Stoutknob, used as a campaign slogan, "Vote for Berle or roast in HELL!!!" I'm so curious as to how many would actually vote for the guy in genuine fear that they would, indeed, burn in Hell.

Hey, I'm cynical enough to believe that a few would fall for it.

5. What Do You Mean You "Guess?"
I think it's really good. People know that sign, and Baxley's will certainly catch their eye when they don't see it by that lake.

Great idea, and I'm glad to have him on our side.

6. The amazing thing about this story
is that the guy who owns the property and the sign is supporting Lucy Baxley instead of Bob Riley or even Roy Moore.

7. I Agree
but not because he is a Christian, but because of his obvious wealth. Something to be admired...

13. wow! i need to check this forum more often.
i can't believe that sign is gone! why, that's blasphemy almost. it's one of those pieces of alabama ya can always count on being there, like boiled peanuts and the elite grill in b'ham or the oyster shack in mobile. i mean those are things you can count on as sure as sure as the sun coming up. dawg gone, it's a new day dawning i reckon. god i always got a chuckle outta that sign. and it was always a great thing to take a future wife by on her first trip to home state and watch her reaction.
