Wal-Mart Lays Off 87 Employees In Tuscaloosa
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Without giving advance notice, Wal-Mart laid off 87 employees Friday at its check collection office in Tuscaloosa, moving the jobs to another firm.

A staff of 125 people is now down to 38 employees. All worked in Tuscaloosa at the company's only check collection center in the nation. The employees were responsible for collecting unpaid bad checks.

While the office will retain 38 customer-service employees, the check-collection jobs will be taken over by Certegy.

"We're transitioning the work that's been being done here for the past few years over to Certergy, which is a check collection company based in Tuscaloosa,” said Sharon Weber, a Wal-Mart representative.

Certegy's check operations are handled within the same building as the Wal-Mart office in Tuscaloosa.

1. I love the final line in the news story:
"Meanwhile, Wal-Mart is encouraging the unemployed workers to apply for other jobs within the company."

Oh, really now?

Hey, but the economy is on the upswing; there's plenty of jobs ... well, okay, yeah, if you inherit them ... like Bush the Younger did ... ARGH!

:wtf:

2. Wana bet Certegy uses contractors?
And you wanna bet that Certegy is going to offer the fired employees contractor positions at a fraction of their previous pay?

4. A fraction of the previous WAL-MART pay????
And what would that be, $3.50 an hour?

8. I don't know what they were being paid
But it was probably a little more than what the in-store workers make.

7. It would be interesting to find out if Certegy makes their
collection calls from India. I'm not sure how to find out, but MANY businesses like that outsource all their calling operations to India...that's how they save $$.

I'm POSITIVE this move was made for one reason ONLY....cost cutting!
