We're Famous! WorldNetDaily attacks Dems and DU for skewing online polls
Democrats skewing online polls?
Net users wonder why pro-Edwards responses so numerous

Posted: October 6, 2004
1:24 p.m. Eastern

Democrats are fraudulently skewing online polls asking about last night's vice presidential debate to favor Sen. John Edwards – at least that's the contention of several Net users who have pointed out strangely lopsided results in various surveys.

"You have either been hacked or the DNC (Democratic National Committee) gremlins are at it big time," one reader wrote to WorldNetDaily about the newssite's poll, pointing out that 2,000 votes were added to three separate pro-Edwards responses "in the middle of the night." WND's poll asking who won the vice presidential debate went live at 1 a.m. Eastern.

(snip)

A posted named "Skinner" on the Democratic site democraticunderground.com posted links to dozens of online polls, encouraging readers to vote for Edwards.

134. Maybe, but there was a story on NPR about the Repubs
DH was telling me about it. He said, "On NPR they were saying the Repubs sent e-mails out telling people to vote in the online polls BEFORE the debate!" I said, "Uh, the Dems did the same thing." He said, "Oh, they didn't mention that." LOL!

Why didn't they mention that Bush's campaign advisors put ALL of the links to every on-line poll available?

CNN even had a story about how they (Republicans) planned to hit the internet polls hard.

They didn't mention it... Because they are "World Net Daily" x( (Who by the way, REPUBLICAN pollster, Scott Rasmussen, works for)

24. Don't know if it has been mentioned anywhere else on DU
but not only did the repugs do the same thing - they stole the list from DU. The GOP, also, drew up a list of talking points for all their front men to hit with the media after the debates. Nothing like conformity when it comes to talking to news people. (Individuality must be frowned upon by the repugs - that or they need Cliff Notes to know what the heck they stand for this week.) Only one small problem, per The Washington Post, the GOP sent the email and the talking points to all of the media and not just the talking heads for the party. Oops, they didn't mean to do that. They wanted their people to sound spontaneous.

The GOP just can't get the hang of this new Internet thingy, can they?

38. And a hilarious one at that
Quotes:

"I thought only we did that!!"

"No, this is referring to perl scripts. It votes 100's, if not 1000's at a time. I asked about this today on a few threads and in FR mail. I did some searching last night after looking at the polls and found some comments on Du-type threads of where they talk about it."

"I think the Dems are voting on a poll, exiting, then going to their internet properties and dumping cookies (or whatever you call it), then returning to the polls over and over, repeating the same process. At least that's what someone said. Don't know whether they knew what they were talking about. If so, the Dems are cheating. Maybe someone knows."

"Pardon G.W. for HAVING THE REST OF THE WORLD on his mind the other night. You could see in his face he was thinking "why do I have to be here listening to this p#@&y when I have the free world to run?"

"We invented it. But it's only bad when dems do it."
------------------------------------------------------------------
I "dumped my cookies" just reading this.

Or is that site really weak. I don't just mean the level of discourse, but that a third grader could write a better site than that. I lurk over there from time to time for shits and grins but having been here and a few other sites of similar caliber i find the freepers site to be just bad. No logical user interface no bells, no whistles, no fun. No wonder they are all repressed and angry.

8. It's only fraudulent if you're hacking the polls or...
...otherwise getting around their built-in restrictions. There's no fraud in letting a large number of people know of the polls' existence.

Also, the RNC has been encouraging Republicans on the Internet to do the exact same thing. They have, or can easily obtain, the same lists we have. So if the polls are heavily slanted in favor of the Democrats, it's beacuse the Democrats are better. Plain and simple.

15. Why is it skewing polls
when all we are doing is showing our support for our candidate? I thought that was the reason for polls. It's not like I am clearing my cookies and cache and all that jazz and then voting twice in the same poll, except if it is CNN and the poll is repeatedly erased.

48. Exactly right
We have one vote per poll and we use it. The funny thing is, there is no way that we make up the number of responders to these polls. It's also the general public who is voting this way, not just us. There are over 2.2 MILLION voters on the MSNBC poll and JE is winning with 59% of the vote there. Who exactly is it that they think is doing that?

50. Yes, I've been thinking this too. DU and the Kerry media corps can
only account for so much.

-Assuming some of both dems and repubs know how to do the cookie thing, the perl script thing, etc.,

AND

-the voters in America really are tied on their candidate preference

AND

-the republican forums got ahold of the same list that Skinner worked so hard to put out for us (thank you Skinner!)

then why are the on-line polls showing millions of voters skewed to Edwards?

Are more dems on-line than repubs? I don't think that's true either.

And look what happened with the CNN on-line poll being put out three separate times and still getting essentially the same result.

So this may be revealing...

65. I have a very strong suspicion
that this election's 'hidden' voters, the newly-registered who do not have land-line phones (only cellular) and are unpolled by the major polling cos., may be the answer. The age group, approx. 18-25, plus the cellular phone connection means, IMHO, that these people are almost certainly on-line. Who would respond to on-line polls then? Hmmmm....

If you look at the results of some of the smaller polls that Skinner listed (local media outlets), the total voters number in the low 1000s. Usually less than 2,000. Definitely not in the 10,000s or 100,000s, let alone millions, that the major news outlets are pulling in. That's not just us. That's the general public.

I don't think the election is going to be all that close. Not unless it is blatantly thrown. Not that we would know of anyone who would do such a terrible thing **cough, Jeb, cough**. ;)

Perhaps with this free advertisement, the future of such polls will undoubtly climb even higher in Kerry Edwards Favor...way cool!

I posted this earlier, thought it was kind of interesting.

The Scientific Value of Unscientific Polls
10.05.04

As I write, we await the start of the vice-presidential debate between Dick Cheney and John Edwards. Word has leaked out that the Bush campaign has issued orders for its troops to hit the Internet (and other media) full blast after this one. Apparently they believe they were outworked last time, allowing Kerry’s folks to control the post debate spin. Not this time! The GOP faithful have their orders -- send letters to the editors, call opinion lines, jump onto the online chat boards and, neither last nor least, hammer the unscientific Internet polls.

Not to be outdone, the Democrats have also sprung into action. Over at the Democratic Underground, for example, the administrators have posted a thread with direct links to more than 60 online polls. Charge!

This is nothing new, of course, to anyone who spends any time at all at partisan discussion boards. One of the most common topics at these places is this or that online poll that needs to be hammered by the faithful.

All of which raises an interesting point. I’ve always laughed off these "unscientific polls" as, well, unscientific. But maybe that’s not true anymore. Maybe in today’s Internet world unscientific polls have scientific value -- not in judging public opinion -- but in judging organizational strength. Who knows? Maybe the side that can best hammer the polls, is the same side that can best hit the ground running on election day to get out their vote.

113. Very Nice Kadie!
To all the frothing freepers- we only voted in about 10 of the online polls ( if you don't want people voting, why have a poll? DUUUUUHHHHH!!!) We voted once per poll, leaving scores of sites untouched. ( It was late, we were tired.)

WE voted on about 20 after the Kerry Debate.

This is so typical of those whiners! They can NEVER admit defeat; these are the Dads and Moms at the Little League games, screaming at their five-year-old kids and vexing the coaches and the umps.

Rather than looking at themselves to see why they are failing, "WooWooo! Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga....Here comes the Excuse Train!!!!!!!!!!All Freepers and Morans ABOOOOOARD!!!!!!!"

51. What's funny about this is
that Free Republic has a significantly larger membership than DU. Also, Freepers were the first to engage in the practice of overwhelming polls by encouraging members to vote as many times as they can. This was quite apparent in 2000 as they pushed one online poll after another George Bush's way.

Perhaps Smirk's candidacy has lost currency with a lot of members there and they aren't all that charged up about his reelection.

85. I think FR is near 300,000
The membership count number was mentioned on FR not too long ago. This however is not an accurate count because many past members have been banned. As for DU I don't know but if you look at both sites it's apparent FR is more active.

I think that will be changing in the next few years as the country gets run into the ground by republicans with or without Smirk.

John Kerry:

Neither man. It was a draw :
0.72%

NOTE: This is not a scientific poll. ( No kidd'in? ) The results above are for information purposes only, and should not be confused with the results of the scientific polls conducted by CBS News. "

What struck me is that so many TV stations around the country took the SAME meaningless poll! If 90% and more of the respondents to these same polls had said Cheney won, would this be an issue? Of course not. They would be trumpeted as "proof" of Cheney's gravitas or whatever else the wingers want to believe he has.

One DUer ONE VOTE. GOT IT? We don't vote multiple times! That's Freeper bullshit. What we DO is VOTE. Since WHEN does MY ONE vote not count??? DU and other organizations have created clearinghouse type pages where we can access the polls, but OUR VOTES STILL COUNT!!

Why can't the media understand that? We're VOTERS!!! Our opinion counts!! It's like having the media complain because the Democrats have a better turn out on election day. With their same foggy reasoning, they could say it was UNFAIR to the republicans because MORE democrats turned out!!

Let me repeat this for the media, who appears to be a bit slow, WE VOTE ONCE, WE VOTE FOR KERRY OR EDWARDS BECAUSE WE BELIEVED THEY WON THE DEBATES. One opinion = ONE vote.

WHy don't the media types and their italian suits, and their fucking double-half-caffe lattes, and manicures, cruise FreeRepublic and read ALL about how THEY have learned to RIG the online polls to repeatedly vote in the same poll. How's that? You media people want to attack us for VOTING ONCE?? Fuck you! We don't "FREEP" the polls, we VOTE in them.. Ask the fucking Freepers WHY they call it "FREEPING" a poll. :grr:

Jack Rabbit's laws of online polls:
  • Any poll that can be freeped will be freeped;
  • Any poll that can be unfreeped can be re-freeped;
  • Anybody who uses an online poll as a barometer of actual public opinion ought to be hung by his thumbs.

To: Spok
We are very inefficient in how we do it.
We ask Freepers to individually vote in the poles.

It appears that the Dems have automated the process.

Gives a whole new meaning to "machine voting".

Perhaps we should let them do it so that it reaches the point where the results get so skewed that they lose all meaning

Look for the number of "crimes" against republican offices to sharply rise. They sense it's a possible sympathy getter, and not all of them are above doing what it takes to generate some sympathy.

Did anyone read the comments by that worker from the office that was burglerized and had laptops stolen?
All he did was accuse democrats. He went over the line.

108. Have you been contacted yet to work for the RNC?????
They are just dying of envy. Actually--where did I read this--apparently the repukes tried to get all their base to flood these polls but were having a terrible time getting them to respond. Couldn't figure out if that was because they are too dumb to run a computer or if they just couldn't get up any enthusiasm to do it!!! You know, it was the 'on line' people who sparked the Dean revolution and I suspect they are still manning their keyboards for the cause. KEEP IT UP!!!

109. FOX News Sunday.
Way to go Posted.

Fox News Sunday reported last weekend that online polls were big for Kerry because the DNC sent out an email asking supporters to vote online. I would love to write to them (thought the likelihood that they'd read it on the air is nil) to say that the RNC/Bush Cheney campaign did the same. DOES ANYONE have a copy (Or link to) the e-mail confirming that fact? It was posted here before the first Presidential debate.

The reason the freepers can't get it up as well as we can (online poll numbers, I mean ;) ) is that they get too sleepy to stay awake & vote online. Heck, Dubya was sleepy 20 minutes into the debate, & Dick got grumpy from sleep deprivation about 45 minutes in.

In all fairness, they have to get up early & go to their jobs raping the environment, stealing from the poor, and opressing the disagvantaged. It's "hard work."

126. Freepers confirm my theory.
To: Gopher Broke
I have to assume all the Freepers watched the debate and went to bed -- based on the lousy number of people voting for the President... I hope this isn't a signal of what to expect Election night.

If this is the mentality we are up against, then I am not worried about the election unless all these idiots have been massively inbreeding.
I doubt they could tie their own shoes without an instruction manual.

As far as "spam bots" I went to every site listed and applied the "one man, one vote" method. Is it possible that there are more of us than there are of them?

116. Did you take the WorldNet Poll?
Edited on Thu Oct-07-04 11:29 AM by catrose
It currently shows Bush at 83% and Kerry behind some other candidates with 1.56%. They require an email address (spamgourmet.com is so useful) to make sure the evil dems don't vote twice. Let your bots go!*

*Note to freepers: Is joke. I have no bots. Just lots of time on my hands, thanks to your boss' great economy with outsourcing so good for all of us.

Thank you, Skinner. I very much appreciate your lists.

Silly me. Forgot the link.

aren't we people? If I vote once on a lot of different polls how is that hurting anything? Am I not allowed an opinion. What do they bother having polls for?

119. Great!
Nothing wrong with flooding the polls. Don't know why that's consdidered fraudulent.

I STILL wish DU would adopt a policy of being against perl scripts and other multiple voting techniques to stuff the ballot box. (No changes in moderating need be adopted.)Although rare, I also saw posts discussing or advocating freeping the polls by deleting cookies or using scripts. It makes the efforts of thousands of DUers look like they're due to a couple of hackers -- in the press, no less.

120. The landslide is building
As is the freeper whine. Bush's talking points are getting more ludicrous by the day. Just heard today's spin on the WMD report. The corporate media attempts to skew voter opinion has really gotten laughable. The attention given to Mt St Helen's hiccup after the first debate. The pulling of the poll results. Anything to take the spotlight off of Bush's sinking popularity. I actually had 2 freepers trying to argue with me that Cheney sitting next to Edwards for 3 hours didn't qualify as having met him. Reality will set in with them on Nov. 3rd.

124. Definition of freeper
freeper

A vile, right-wing, hatred-spewing wingnut who is a member of the freerepublic.com forum. No dissent is allowed, users who post even the most mild deviation from the the most extreme neoconservative rhetoric are banned from the site. Limbaugh's fans, "dittoheads", are centrists by comparison. Freepers are particularly obsessed with Bill Clinton's penis.

The group invalidates invalidates political internet polls by repetitive voting in order to skew the results as far right as possible, i.e. "We freeped that poll!" They troll any and all political forums.

See "Borg". Also, "freeped", "to freep". Should always be lowercase.

"Into the mud, freeper scum!"

127. Freepers have more visitors to direct to online polls
usually this isn't statistics that we'd like to post, but in this case it demonstrates that the online influence of partisan message boards favors the freepers over DU'ers:

Traffic Rank for democraticunderground.com: 6,633
Today 1 wk. Avg. 3 mos. Avg. 3 mos. Change
4,647 6,310 6,633 470

Traffic Rank for freerepublic.com: 2,247
Today 1 wk. Avg. 3 mos. Avg. 3 mos. Change
1,234 1,409 2,247 25

Freepers have the traffic advantage, imo, because right wing talk radio provides them much more free advertising than left wing talk radio provides DU.

128. We're just better at it. Crybaby Wimps
Look what I got the morning of the debate:

Dear ____,

The debate tonight presents a tremendous opportunity for the campaign to attract undecided voters, but people's perceptions are shaped as much by their conversations around the water cooler as by the debates themselves.

The Vice President's goal is to do what he's been doing throughout this election: explain to the American people why the President's policies are right for America and the world we live in today - in fighting the war on terror, in keeping our economy growing and in responding to the new challenges of the 21st century.

After last week's debate, the Kerry campaign spin machine managed to mask their candidate's flip-flops on the war in Iraq, imposition of a "global test" for protecting America, and repeated denigration of our troops and allies.

If we plan to win the election, we must fight back against their spin and make sure our friends and neighbors get the truth.

We need your help tonight!

Visit www.GeorgeWBush.com/DebateFacts tonight during the debate so you will have the facts.  Print and share them with your friends.
Immediately after the debate, visit online polls, chat rooms, and discussion boards and make your voice heard.  The major news networks will all have internet polls after the debate.  Make sure you vote in polls on:
MSNBC.com
FoxNews.com
ABCNews.com
CNN.com
and even CBS.

Make sure swing state voters know why you support the President by sharing your thoughts on message boards in target states.
Call Talk Radio shows in your area.
Write letters to the editors of your local papers.
Visit Chat rooms on AOL, MSN, and Yahoo!
Send this message to 5 friends using the form at the bottom of this page.

129. The Repubs voted, too! Does this mean there's more of us who care
enough to vote online? If so, does that translate that there are more of us who care enough to vote on Nov. 2nd? Or is it just the computer thing?

They're right about one thing, though. There's nothing else out there like DU.

I find it very hard to believe that American's would think independently...that is, when Tweety's claiming a resounding victory for Cheney, I don't think Tweety-watchers are going on-line to disagree with him. Most Americans can very easily be told what to think.
