Cheney's record (scary on civil rights!)

Cheney's voting record in Congress
In 1986, he was one of only twenty-one members of the House to oppose the Safe Drinking Water Act.
He fought efforts to clean up hazardous waste and backed tax breaks for energy corporations.
He repeatedly voted against funding for the Veterans Administration.
He opposed extending the Civil Rights Act.
He opposed the release of Nelson Mandela from jail in South Africa.
He even voted for cop-killer bullets.

He opposed federal funding for abortions -- with no exceptions in the case of rape or incest.
He voted against the Equal Rights Amendment for women, along with 146 other members of Congress in 1983.
On Education, he consistently opposed funding of Head Start and voted against creating the Department of Education.
Cheney was raised in Wyoming and opposes, as many Westerners do, gun control limits.
He was one of just 21 members of Congress, in December of 1985, to vote against a ban on armor piercing bullets -- called cop killer bullets.
Three years later he was one of only four members of the House voting against a ban on plastic guns that could slip through airport security machines undetected. The National Rifle Association did not oppose this ban.
Also in 1988, Cheney voted to scrap a proposed national seven-day waiting period on handgun purchases.
On the environment, Cheney opposed refunding the Clean Water Act. He voted to postpone sanctions slapped on air polluters that failed to meet pollution standards.
And he voted against legislation to require oil, chemical and other industries from making public records of emissions known to cause cancer, birth defects and other chronic diseases.
Dick Cheney consistently voted to raise military spending. He also supported aid to the Nicaraguan rebels, even after a moratorium on funding was passed.

1. and from here
"Vice president Dick Cheney might also come under some scrutiny. When the House of Representatives offered a resolution, in the 1970s, calling on the white supremacist South African government to release Nelson Mandela from prison, Congressman Cheney voted "NO"! And for what crime had the white South African government imprisoned Nelson Mandela? For thinking that the blacks of South Africa - a majority of that country's population - should have a "say" in their government. Some would consider that Cheney vote a vote for continued white supremacy in South Africa. Fortunately, saner heads prevailed in South Africa; Nelson Mandela was released after 27 years in prison, went on to lead his country away from the horror of Apartheid and, later, win a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts."

4. Are there any right wingers that have good civil rights records?
The ones that get the press are all terrible. Strom Thurmond, Jesse Helms, Trent Lott, John Ashcroft, and Bush have all said and done things that should anger minorities. If the Democrats could win back the black vote then they would be able to take the election easily.

I read recently, I think in Clinton's autobiography, that no Democrat has won the majority of white votes since the Civil Rights Act 40 years ago. That means the only way Carter and Big Dog won was by getting out the black vote.
