Edwards might have won this thing.
I know DU is one sided, but there is a lot of evidence.

1. Cheney caught lying on whether he met Edwards. This is the bigger of the two big lies because it's more obvious and simpler to comprehend.

2. Cheney caught lying on Iraq and Al Queda

3. Stories from DUers who watched the debate with friends or got calls.

4. Online polls are off the charts. They are better for Edwards than they were for Kerry.

I'm wondering if Edwards didn't sneak out a win. I personally thought he was good and the debate was a non event, but I might be wrong.

1. He DID win.
And it really comes down to the polls. Put simply, Edwards connected, and Cheney looked like a piece of shit.

It's funny with all the spin, but Kerry/Edwards came out the winner in this debate as far as making progress with the American people simply because Edwards was a likable guy.

LOL  :)

6. I felt the same way. I will never forget the Kennedy debate.
I saw Cheney sweating BIG lies. Edwards, cool and in command.

3. he's got the southern charm, the good looks
he reminds me of.... me ;)

And remember MLB was goin down tonight, so not to be biased here, there may have been a lack of guys watching the debates. Only political junkies like us decided the future of our country was more important than baseball (trust me it was a hard decision).

5. In the circumstances, he DID win.
His job was to get at least a draw, so KE can maintain momentum. He won, as far as I'm concerned, but there is no way anyone can make a cogent arguement that Cheney won.

Cheney badly needed a decisive win to reverse the Big Mo and he failed.

7. I was disappointed in Edwards because he could have scored
a 10. Instead I felt his performance lacked some of the specifics and zingers that he could have done...in fact I was in a room full of people who were responding MUCH more clearly to Cheney in live time than Edwards was.

Edwards only scored about a 5. He's a man who is capable of a 10. HE disappointed me if I were only assessing him against his own potential.

On the other hand Cheney simply lied, and came across so nasty and creepy...that Edwards looked better.

If I were to score this like a debate judge I might even call it a close debate on structure because Cheney scored some cheap points with what he claims were "facts"...offering specifics, even if they are wrong or misleading...scores points during debates.

However I think the way in which he did it...by being snide, and lying...is going to tear him down as people review the facts and watch the sound bites.

Edwards ties in primetime because he could have done better.

Edwards wins BIG in the after debate spin because he didn't lie and Cheney was caught in at least two BIG whoopers...(never met Edwards, and never implied Saddam/911 connection)>

10. I'm beginning to second guess myself
I also thought that Edwards (and also Kerry) could have "scored more points" by hammering this or that lie. But, I'm rethinking myself. Why?

Cognitive dissonance. I think if Kerry and Edwards put too much out too fast, large segments of the public will choke on it. It's too dissimilar to what they believe to be true. I'm beginnng to think they're spooling the good stuff out, a bit at a time. And, I think that it might be working.

But then again, it might be the sleep deprivation speaking... (2 month old baby girl, who is NOT happy. No sleep tonight!)

8. Easy to underestimate
Easy to underestimate the degree to which impressions and stereotypes affect people's reactions. Cheney is the fatcat CEO notwithstanding his schpiel about comming from working stock. Only lawyers and executives will be able to relate to him directly. Even if he won on points in the first half of the debate, he lost a lot of ground later by seeming out of touch, reciting statistics while Edwards tried to connect with people about lost jobs and health care. Cheney only seemed human talking about his daughter, and there he was basically contradicting administration policy.

9. I think Edwards won the debate and I know two things for certain:
1. John Edwards is no Dan Quayle -- he held his own against a very tough oppenent and had a wonderful closing statment. I found it moving and presidential.

2. Joh Edwards came up a few notches in my personal opinion of him, and I'll bet I'm not alone -- I'll bet their were plenty of Kerry / Edwrds supporters who had some reservations about edwards being a little too inexperienced, a little "light". Those reservations were addressed for me tonight. I thought it was an impressive performance.
