6. Ahh
Okay...

I think my memories are pretty much the same as the edited tape that Earl linked to now on the Front Page. I forgot that he actually finished a sentence.

3. Yes
Howard is not doing well. I follow the sortwave bands around the world as the time gets later and later (The Middle East Stations in the late afternoon, European Stations in the evenining until about 10 PM. then the BBC until 1 AM and then after 2 AM the Australaim Broadcasting Comapny comes on until about an hour after dawn Eastern time, so I get a fairly good picture of what is going on in World news and Howard is meeting with even worse opposition than Blair has.

If any of you have a Shortwave Radio after about 2-3 AM ABC starts coming in very clearly on 9580. A lot of stuff you never hear or read in the U.S.

I really hope that Howard gets sent packing next weekend, but I'm not feeling any great confidence that it'll happen....

10. Howard is the leader of the Liberal Party
Edited on Mon Oct-04-04 12:05 AM by Djinn
which here is the conservative one - the main opposition is the ALP (Australian Labor Party) because we have preferential voting (and proportional voting in the Senate) the role of minor parties is more than that of minors in US.

Many people will be voting for a strong representation from minor parties in the Senate because the disolusion with the major parties is similar to that which is found in US and UK et al ie they have become so close to each other that finding a point of difference that is anything other than rhetoric or window dressing is really difficult. Also much like situation in US REAL conservatives have a problem with the profligate pork barrelling by the Libs and their view that taxes are collected for the pure purpose of bribing marginal seat voters at election time, REAL "progressives" have given up on the ALP because they pander as much to big business as the Libs and are just as likely to bash the poor, unions, refugees, indigenous Australians and homosexual folk as the other side.

The polls are looking close but I think most people will figure with teh oplicies and aims of each party looking so bloody similar they might as well go for the devil they know.

11. Howard's defeat
would be a black eye for Bush, at just the right time.

I don't care how similar the two parties are to each other, Howard is perceived to be Bush's "lap dog" in the Pacific, and Blair his "lap dog" in the Atlantic.

What ever it takes, Australia should defeat Howard.

If the "Devil" you know is better than the one that you don't, Hitler would have been the leader of Germany until he died of old age.

12. you don't need to convince me
since the before the election annoucement was made I've been on my feet fundraising, door knocking, leafleting, holding info stalls etc -beleive me I'd rather chew glass than see him re-elected - unfortunately I don't think the majority of Australia (or to put it correctly the majority of people in marginal seats) feel the same way.

Scarilly enough Howard's relationship with Bush (even if that basically amounts to butt kisser) works in his favour - not with people who'd never consider voting for him anyway but with undecided folk, what can I say - there's as many thick people in Australia willing to vote against their own interests as there are in your patr of the world.

Keep your fingers crossed!
