Bush won the debate with Kerry (San Fran Chronicle)
Before I give you a snip of this insipid piece let me just say that I've spoken to a LOT of people who saw the debate and not one of them has said that Bush even got close to Kerry.

This pundit is harping on the Kerry Resolution vote... She just doesn't get it. BTW: You'd think that the most liberal city in America would have the most liberal newspaper? :wtf:

'LL CONCEDE, style counts. It was fair game for critics to say Democratic candidate Al Gore's demeanor defined his performance in the 2000 presidential debates. In that spirit, my verdict is: On the demeanor question, George W. Bush lost Thursday night. But he won on substance. You can count me in agreement with the 37 percent of Americans who told the CNN/Gallup poll that Bush got the better of John Kerry.

Kerry looked good and talked better. But every argument Kerry hurled against Bush also worked against Kerry.

Consider Kerry on the president's mistake in going after Saddam Hussein before capturing Osama bin Laden. Or, as Kerry intoned, "We can't leave a failed Iraq. But that doesn't mean it wasn't a mistake of judgment to go there and take the focus off Osama bin Laden." I reread Kerry's very long and also ponderous remarks before he voted in favor of the October 2002 resolution authorizing force in Iraq. Kerry never mentioned Osama bin Laden. (Is that the fault of Bush, too?)

1. Debra Saunders doesn't even bother to hide her loyalty to the Bush family.
Bush could have picked his nose and scratched his balls and she would have written how he's so in touch with the common man.

9. Interestingly,
Scrub probably could have farted loudly, spoken often of his 'private conversations with beings from a far off galaxy,' had a snot bubble in his nose, a continuous stream of piss running down his pant leg on camera, and that 37% would still think he won the debate. Well, they would say he won the debate. They certainly wouldn't be thinking...

6. NY Post has highest tabloid circulation in NYC
and it is Rupert trash.

A very liberal and very intelligent (PhD) friend says she buys it for gossip, pop culture and local stories, but completely ignores the editorial pages, unless she's looking for a good joke.

The Post, try as it might, has not really been able to sway NY voters.

11. Don't mean to be a nag, but

Deborah Saunders is a known conservative, and not
specifying the name of the columnist is misleading.

Course writing "a conservative columnist says..."
doesn't get quite as much attention as a "SF columnist."

:puke:

20. Ummm
The fucking story is front page, #1 on the list at Google News.

You mean to tell me that of the millions of visitors to Google News per hour, they're all going to realize Deborah Sanders or whoever is a conservative columnist? No, they're just going to see the headline "BUSH WON THE DEBATE WITH KERRY."

Jesus christ, some people need a chill pill. I'd never even heard of Deborah Sanders until 5 minutes ago.

I was nice, polite, and you come in here, stick your nose
in and start yelling at me.

Looks like I'm not the one who needs to take some kind
of pill.

Glad you got educated, though.

NOT.

I mean, after all, SF is the home market of

28. Chicago Tribune
Assuming you're a fellow Chicagoan, grace0418. I take it you read the Trib's breakdown of the debate in the ed page? Did you like how they managed to skewer it so Bush was right on every question? I think the eds at the Trib know their guy got smoked and they printed that to help bail his ass out. A telling note, though. When the piece asked who the winner was the Trib said the American people. Believe me, if they believed that Bush had won they'd have said so. They couldn't go so far as to say that Kerry won. Against Trib rules, you know. They probably still are convincing themselves that Dole won every debate with Clinton.

18. Here's what I wrote
Dear Ms. Saunders,

Let me start by saying that San Francisco is one of my favorite cities in the world. I have several family members who live there and someday, if this darn economy ever improves (for regular folks, not just Halliburton shareholders), I would love to live there myself.

However I was surprised that the paper of one of the most liberal cities in the world would be printing the same tired Rovian/Faux-News line of thinking that Bush was so unsuccessfully using in the debate Thursday night. Hey everyone, Kerry sends mixed messages in case you missed it!

I personally thought that the spin after the Gore/Bush debates in 2000 was terrible. Judging a man based purely on his facial expressions and demeanor is absurd in my opinion. So, while I think that George W. Bush did not seem to handle the pressure well, that was the least of my criteria in judging the debate. What I did judge harshly was Mr. Bush's inability to articulate anything but that same old garbage (see the paragraph above). On content, Kerry won so decisively I have to wonder if you and I were tuned into the same debate. Kerry had facts, Kerry was thoughtful, Kerry was direct. Bush had "don't forget Poland!"

Your column used that snappy "Then why did Kerry vote for the war resolution?" line no less than three times. Believe me, I've wondered that myself in the past. I wish Kerry had not voted for it, but I am glad that he learned from his mistake. Haven't you, ever in your life, done something even though a nagging voice in your head tells you it's not a good idea? Of course you have, everyone has. Anyone who says no to that question is lying. But the real test of a human is what he or she learns from mistakes like that. John Kerry made a judgment error, but so did George Bush. Mr. Bush, being the President, carries more responsibility for the judgment error of Iraq than John Kerry or anyone else. And Mr. Bush has taken absolutely no responsibility for it whatsoever.

"Kerry missed these important signposts -- and he wants to lead America? "

Perhaps John Kerry did miss these signposts, I don't know for sure, but what I do know is that John Kerry seems to be willing to say he missed some signposts and stop to ask for directions. George Bush has insisted he knows where he's going for four years and won't listen to anyone. And he's about to "lead" this country right off a cliff.

So count me with the vast majority who say John Kerry won the debate Thursday. And, while you're at it, count me with the majority who said George Bush didn't win in 2000 and the majority who will show him the door in 2004.
