theory about debate/media
Call it the Fahrenheit 9-11 Syndrome:

If we had anything close to a real, functioning media, Bush's abyssmal performance last night would have come as no surprise to anyone.
But instead, we've got a naked emperor who has been worshipped and catered to by a lazy, incompetent and smarmy press. Now the American people have seen -- for the FIRST time in this whole term -- how clueless, petty, nasty and ill-suited Bush is for the presidency.

So what do they do?

NOW all of a sudden, we have them either making excuses (he was upset about the hurricane/war), denying that Kerry won ( it's really a draw -- we won't know for days).
Or, they're complaining that the Dems organized a "faux" response.

Or, like Tessio in The Godfather, they're making the smart move - distancing themselves from Bush in order to innoculate themselves.
