High School Band Declines Invitation To Play For Bush

POSTED: 10:15 am EDT October 1, 2004

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- A high school marching band has turned down an invitation to play for President George W. Bush during his visit to Allentown, Pa, Friday.

The band from Parkland High School said it wants to remain neutral in the presidential race.

Sean King, the director of marketing for the U.S. Scholastic Band Association, said he can't recall a high school band ever turning down an invitation to play for the president.

14. Why Allentown fought back
I used to work in Allentown in the early and mid 1990s. During that era, it was run by a bunch of prissy, tight-ass prig Republicans, the stereotypical villains who would ban rock-n-roll, outlaw dancing and confiscate all copies of MAD magazine.

Well, since those days, Allentown has voted almost straight Democratic. And I suspect that the Parkland HS Marching Band's snub of Bush is part of that rebellion.
