What went wrong with Bush last night
Part of the problem is that Bush has spent the last four years, and really the last 40 years, in a bubble. The fake "Ask President Bush" forums (and worse, the official White House "press conferences") in which the president fields only prescreened and flattering questions has left him joyfully unprepared for a forum in which his mettle is tested against critical examination.

In other words, the failure of the president last night was not a failure of intelligence or of character. It was a failure of his administration to honor the substance of a democratic form of government. If you don't vet your opinions thru the honest market place of ideas, as a democracy demands, you won't hold up in an honest comparison. The president didn't lose because Kerry's a better debater. He lost because he's not been doing his job right for the last four years.

6. Lehrer's questions were not tough or unexpected but.........

far more involved and complicated than W has heard in a loooooooong time. His catch phrase responses didn't fit the questions asked and on several occasions he broke the "RULES" in order to try to get his message out.

If everything did change after 9/11 that would include someone more able to deal with complex situations not sound bites.

It was the first look many Americans got of W outside of the suffocating confinement of the last 2 years. They saw what we have seen for a long time.

10. He's never done any job right...
...in his entire life. Except maybe owner of the Texas Rangers. Maybe. Other than that, though, his entire life is one big fucking ZERO.

(Kind of like mine. But I'm not president.)
