Where do the candidates stand on the death penalty?

1. This is a really great subject xrepub, an important issue.
Maybe you could further it along by collecting some info/statements
from the candidate's issues sections on their websites,
(like in the college tuition thread) so that we can discuss it.

3. Dennis and Dean will abolish it.
Kerry would execute terrorists. Under Homeland Security definitions that means us. Mosely-Braun is wish-washy but for a moritorium. Edwards, Clark, Lieberman and Gephardt are opposed to executing innocent people. Dean has no qualms about executing poor, black innocent people - the more the merrier to him. See earlier threads.

4. Some of that doesn't fit the positions I've found

Braun proposed a moratorium in Illinois as early as 1984. Also, I'm sure Kerry would refine the Patriot Act.

6. Sorry. THat's Kuicinich and Sharpton will abolish it. Dean has no
qualms about executing innocent people as proven by his statements in his "Meet The Press" interview.

7. I found a great website.
I am sure many folks around here have it. A link for it is:

http://www.issues2000.org/default.htm

To try to save some folks some time.

Clark:
Q: Your opinion of the death penalty?
A: I believe that the state has a right to impose the ultimate sanction. But the way the death penalty has been imposed in America is discriminatory. Every existing case on death row should be reevaluated if modern technologies like DNA testing are available to confirm or deny guilt. More broadly, I am concerned that justice today is less than equal, given the vast disparities in sentencing and confinement rates between various groups.

Edwards:

Sponsored "Innocence Protection Act", which requires DNA testing for all federal executions.

Dean:

Promptly instruct my Attorney General to evaluate the federal death penalty system, take steps to ensure that it is applied fairly and reliably, and reverse Ashcroft's overzealous policies.
Push for passage of the federal Innocence Protection Act to strengthen protections against unjust imposition of the death penalty.
Establish a Presidential Commission to analyze the causes of wrongful convictions around the country and recommend additional reforms.

Evaluate the federal death penalty system, take steps to ensure that it is applied fairly and reliably, and reverse Bush's and Ashcroft's overzealous policies.
Push for passage of the federal Innocence Protection Act to strengthen protections against unjust imposition of the death penalty.
Establish a Presidential Commission on the Administration of Capital Punishment to analyze the causes of wrongful convictions around the country.

Kerry:

Sponsored "Innocence Protection Act."

Voted NO on limiting death penalty appeals.

---I know this is not a complete list. Hopefully, it should be alteast somewhat helpful. The link provides information for all candidates. Sorry, this post would have been a mile long if I posted all information related on all candidates...Kevin.

8. Thank you Kevin! This is a great link.
I didn't have it.

I'd prefer that they all say they'll stop killing people until
they're sure that the criminal justice system no longer targets
blacks and poor folks...
