Why it will be very difficult for Kerry to win
John Fogerty recalls the 1971 election.

'The scary thing is, in 1972, when there was unanimous disgust for a fully raging Vietnam War, Nixon won by a landslide,' Fogerty says. 'I hope there's still room in this country for discussion. We need to examine our chances of ever winning this war.'"

During a time of war people are reluctant to change: period. Further, it's well known there are divisions within the Democratic party about the war - some Dems supported it, others were adamantly against. Our basic primitive natures lead most of us to go for those who talk the toughest and put forth the most united front. It has nothing to do with John Kerry or George Bush - and things may have to truly go to hell in a handbasket before the repigs are taken down by their own incompetence. I wouldn't be surprised if that happened by 2008. But this year Kerry is swimming against this stream. He could win, but it's ain't gonna be easy. Bush has fucked it up in Iraq, but it almost protects him in some sick, twisted, ironic way.

1. Nixon didn't start the war
most of the lies that got us into Vietnam were committed by LBJ, who paid for it in 1968.

2. Many other issues besides the war
Nixon, in 1972, had a strong economy and wasn't running a $477B deficit.

3. It will be difficult for him if Democrats don't close ranks
Republicans, for all their faults, are always behind their candidate. He can committ murder on national television (as he has), and they still will back him. It's pretty effective.

6. I mean it's refreshing to hear a few of them speak up now
But for most of the part you never hear Repubs criticize each other or Bush the way Democrats do sometimes, which is a plus and minus. The plus is we don't have group-think, everyone has their own opinion. The minus it hurts us because Joe Schomoe can't comprehend more than 1 point of view.
