Hah! Olberman reporting Bush's "Kerry could debate himself" remark
Keith said: Kerry supporters, please restrain yourself from comments about how he'd at least be debating his intellectual match.

18. Bush is morphing into his loser father by the minute.
Edited on Tue Sep-28-04 03:29 AM by VolcanoJen
I keep thinking of that line near the end of "The American President." Michael Douglas, playing President Andrew Shephard, fights for his political life against his opponent, Senator Bob Rumson (played by Richard Dreyfuss) whose catchphrase is "I'm Bob Rumson, and I'm running for President!"

Michael Douglas wraps up a hard-as-nails response to vicious partisan attacks on his character as the Commander-in-Chief, by saying, firmly, "I'm Andy Shephard, and I am the President."

It must exist only in the movies, because that's what one expects to hear from the President during the fight of his life. Dignity. Leadership. Make-me-like-you.

Like his father in the waning days of the failed '92 re-election bid against The Mighty Clenis, The Chimperor becomes more undignified by the hour. I think Kerry can nail him on this, chip away at his armor. I see a huge hole in the left flank.

More on this line of thinking from Atrios; scroll down to the header, "Unpresidential."

22. Morford wrote about this in his last column,
(where he proves once again that you *can* get stoned on the English language)

snip>
But I suppose this is the saddest part of all. That is, how cheerless and heartbreaking is it when you are essentially forced to wish that your candidate would be more ruthless, more cutthroat, more ferocious. When deep down you long for a little dignity among your leaders, some humanitarian deftness, some way to salvage a shred of spirit and hope amongst the political carnage.

Not this time. After all, sometimes, when playing badminton with the devil, you gotta screw the birdies and lob a couple grenades.

Carter was asked about it in his last c-span forum. He remembered that in running against Ford AND Reagan, the last thing any of them would think of doing is impugning the others character. They refered to each other only as "my esteemed opponent"

First I worry that society's so devolved that we'll never see such dignity in leadership again. But then I hear the way Obama responds to a snipe from Keyes:

Keyes: He's afraid of me! He SAID he'd do SIX debates but now that I'm running, he's AFRAID to debate that many times. He's a COWARD!

Obama: Six debates was my In-State-Special.

...maybe there are leaders coming.

21. If Mr Kerry uses this, he needs to set it up properly.
He can't just use Mr. Olbermann's line verbatim. That would just look mean. For example:

"When this guy says I can debate myself, I'm reminded of not just that this guy can't get my record correct, but that this guy can't even speak correctly. I'm reminded of when he said OB-GYN's practice love, not medicine, with their patients. I'm reminded that this guy can't even say 'nuclear' or 'Abu Ghraib' properly. I'm reminded that this guy said his administration as well as terrorists are always thinking of new ways to harm America. If I do debate myself, at least it would be with an intellectual equal."

Short examples of how stupid Bush is, then the punchline.
