We canvassed in Richmond today :-)
One side of one street 6 blocks.

Now mind you this is Richmond (Museum District)so the results really weren't very unexpected.

5 HARD Yes's for Kerry
1 HARD Yes for Bush

The way I figured it:

Counting signs in the yards of people we were supposed to canvass
New tenants in apartments ( not the actual person on the list)
The same (above) telling us how their neighbor was voting/sister next door/etc.

AND giving the benefit of the doubt to Bush on the one " I really don't like either of them"

The total was

18-Kerry
4-Bush

AND! We registered a voter from outside of the neighborhood-a black female from a very black part of town!

3. We are going to the State Fair to work the booth tomorrow
and again next weekend.

I understand that despite the fact that (for SOME reason) is a vastly Bush crowd they are almost out of t-shirts and stuff they are selling and that many people are just giving them money to help the campaign.

11. I went to the State Fair yesterday
and I noticed so many Bush stickers out in the crowds but not very many Kerry/Edwards stickers. I could not even find the location of the Kerry people. Some people that had the Kerry/Edwards stickers said it was in the big building? At any rate, I was just wondering if Richmond is very conservative(I'm from Hampton Roads area so I was not sure)? I got there about 2 and left at 9 and during that time there were so many Bush/Cheney stickers. :-(

12. Welcome helpisontheway
My sister is in Buckroe Beach and I convinced her to vote for Dennis in the primaries. I have hope for Virginia. I think alot of the people who show their support for bush the lesser do so out of fear. Every day it gets harder to stand behind his failed policies. I live in an area that has similar indications of bush support, but most people I talk to can't stand behind the follies of little george. My personal nemesis is a teacher and doesn't realize the negative impact of bush policies on his future. I hope I can get his brain working before November, I'll never give up on the lost cause.

13. Thanks Tech3149
I hope VA turns blue this year. I volunteer here and lately we have been doing a lot of phone banking. They have us calling swing precincts to identify Kerry voters. On both batches I had the voters were split basically half and half. I guess that is why I was so discouraged after seeing so many Bush supporters at the fair in Richmond.

19. I understand that it is in one of the expo halls
I haven't been there yet myself though.

Welcome to DU :hi:

The CITY or Richmond votes heavily Democratic but Chesterfield and Henrico (East and We$t) vote Republican.

6. why be so excited about registering a black female? It sounds weird that
you'd be so excited about registering someone from a "black" part of the town. It sounds odd when you highlight that person's race as if it's something to crow about.

8. Uh because blacks tend to vote quite heavily Dem
and she said she is voting for Kerry.

and because that is one vote that might have been missed if we hadn't been there at that time

and because we need every vote we can get

and because we need to get as many PEOPLE to the polls as possible

and if that PERSON happens to be a female all the better

and because I was trying to offer demographic information as that is very important

and because it is the first person I, or my wife, have ever registered and we were excited about it (see all above)

I'll leave it there.

17. let's just hope that the Dem party doesn't leave
the African-Americans 'at the dance' again this year. (paraphrasing Rev. Al)

Bush has all but barred the door to about 99.9% of entire population. Don't get the logic of ANYONE, any color any creed, any-any voting for this idiot.

Good for you out there registering.

20. That is so great!
I've seen way more Kerry/Edwards yard signs and bumperstickers in Richmond than W.

Richmond is my secondary home...primary home is rural, on the Bay. I've been focusing my energy in this area and surrounding counties because it's even more right-wing than Richmond, if you can imagine that. Recently at an event, Tim Kaine told us that we only have to increase the precentage of dem voters, particularily in the rural areas, by a little bit and we can go BLUE!

We had a small town festival here a few weeks ago that brings in thousands of people. We thought our Kerry/Edwards booth would be the loneliest place in town. But we were very pleasantly surprised. We got an overwhelmingly positive reponse. Ran out of all our stuff...signs, buttons, etc. We made cookies, wrapped individually, and put a homemade sticker on them and later saw people who had those stickers on their shirts. We registered quite a few 18 year olds who were excited and happy to have the opportunity to vote. Being a small town, we were able to hand them the form and point across the street to the registrars office, who was open that day.

Considering that this little town never had a democratic committee and now we have a huge and vibrantly active one...the same with surrounding counties in Northern Neck and Gloucester area...it makes it so hard to believe the polls.

Keep up the good work! Good luck at the State Fair!
