Why we need to fund and organize the opposition to 69 (CA)
This proposition allows for DNA testing of arrestees. Remember the 2000 protesters arrested in New York? Remember the strikers who were arrested for ADW when someone walked into their picket signs? The charges could be bogus but Karl Rove, John Ashcroft and Porter Goss get you DNA. Next you are denied insurance because of an inherited tendency you didn't even know existed. The California Democratic Party took an official position in opposition to 69 but there is reportedly no organized opposition.
1. genius, thanks for posting. I agree this is imp. First off, there are
a gillion things to fix about the california Prison system before we give those knuckleheads any more imp. responsibilities.. I do not trust CA prison/penal management to make a stale cheese sandwich, let alone manage something as intricate and important as dna extraction and database maintenance. I hope you post this in CALIFORNIA STATES FORUM with a link. Are you in CA?
2. Yes I am. I imagine the props are at the Secretary of State's site.
69 affects arrestees as opposed to prison inmates. Ashcroft has been eager to collect a national DNA data base and this is how they plan to go about it.
There is another prop (66) that will cut down on the prison pop by limiting three strikes to violent felonies and three separate acts. Now someone can go to prison for life for stealing a piece of pizza for their starving child.
