Which of our past presidents could have met the "drinking pal" likability
standard that's been floated by the media about GWB?

I posted this on another thread, but then thought I'd like to ask fellow DU'ers if any past presidents would be fun drinking buddies. Below, a few of my observations....

Would you have really wanted to share a beer with Lincoln? The fellow was morose but brilliant and principled.

How about FDR? Aristocratic and high bred. Maybe a little high and mighty but (again) principled, decisive and brave.

There's Truman...pissed off lots of his colleagues and subordinates with his abrasive and demanding style. Blunt and impolite, made decisions and accepted accountability.

Any other examples of presidents as drinking pals? MKJ

13. Andrew Jackson
His inauguration party got so rowdy that many of the White House furnishings were destroyed by drunken revelers. It was quite a scandal at the time. I'm not sure if it was invited guests or if it was an open house type of thing that got out of control but he sure knew how to throw a party!

Edited on Sat Sep-25-04 06:22 PM by Barney Rocks
Clinton (of course), Reagan (like him or not, he liked to tell jokes and stories--he would probably be the life of the party at a bar), Kennedy (quite a fun partier), and Teddy Roosevelt (one of the coolest guys to ever be in the white house).

I would also like to drink with Teddy's cousin FDR--but not beer--I picture a drink with FDR as being more Martini time.

Thomas Jefferson. Can you just imagine the discussions you could have with the most brilliant man America ever produced.

As John Kennedy said to a room full of Noble Prize winners at the White House, "never has this room been graced with such intelligence. At least not since Jefferson dined here alone." or something like that.

DEFINETELY Clinton.

He's da man. As one of my friends said (that voted for Bush in '00 and said he regrets it). "You know who I wish I could vote for?", Then he answered, "Bill freakin Clinton."

I was really amazed. Then another friend (diehard dem) said, "yeah I think most people would still vote for him even after those scandals".

I tried coming in, saying "That's because his scandals were petty"

He cut me off and said, "No it's because he's a player".

HA, he got me. It would be so cool to have a drink, dinner, or just hang out with Clinton. Clinton still kicks ass. I think many, especially in my age group, are so tired of Bush's prudish sanctomonious BS.

I think I'd enjoy a conversation with him whether it was over a beer or whatever.

As to Bush as a drinking buddy please. We've all dealt with that kind of drunk who initially seemed friendly enough. However we ended up leaving the bar early because they started to annoy the hell out of us. If we didn't we'd either scream in anguish or end up beating the living shit out of them.

Teddy Roosevelt would tell the best stories, Kennedy would bring the hottest babes along, Gerald Ford would just look right sitting there with a beer in his hand, LBJ would have his dick out before the night was through, Bush 41 would end up puking on someone, Lincoln would do "adult" versions of all his famous speeches, and Andrew Jackson would get mad and shoot someone dead.

40. If it's drinking buddies you're looking for, Harding was your man
http://ma.essortment.com/warrengharding_rkpr.htm

Warren Harding brought a number of his Ohio cronies with him to Washington. These men weren’t politicians or men interested in government. They were businessmen, for the most part, who were more interested in what they could gain from the government. This became obvious during the Teapot Dome scandal, where Harding and his “advisors” struck up an illegal deal for land and oil. Harding washed his hands of the affair, but a good number of men had their careers ruined (as did a lot of underhanded thieves).

Perhaps Harding had a “presidential look” while running for election, but he did not maintain what many today like to think of as a “presidential lifestyle.”

In the evenings, Harding would invite his cronies and some trusted members of Congress, which included fellow Ohioan Speaker of the House Nick Longworth and his wife Alice, for poker games that would last all night. During Prohibition, bathtub gin and other alcoholic beverages flowed in the Harding White House. His wife, Florence – usually referred to as Dutchess by Harding’s friends – would act as a waitress, serving drinks, lighting cigars, bringing new packs of cards, and Harding and the others would play poker and gamble.

All of those guys. Honestly, Reagan. Lincoln was actually a big joker. Thomas Jefferson. George Washington.

Of course, Bill Clinton would be a riot.

A lot of people are saying Carter, but I'm pretty sure that while Carter would've been an incredibly decent guy and a great guy to spend a day with, I don't know if I'd drink with him.

I don't know about Eisenhower - maybe?

...from what I've read he was just one hell of a fun person to be around in a party situation, especially if you were interested in politics.
FDR was known to mix a mean Martini - that would've been fun and interesting, too.
Bill Clinton & JFK for sure, and, honestly, Reagan. Ike liked to play cards, so I'd add him to the list as well.
No Calvin Coolidge or Richard Nixon, though: certified party poopers, in more ways than one.

On edit: grammar.
