Democratic voter registration far surpasses GOP in Ohio, Florida

Both Parties See a Big Increase in New Voters
By FORD FESSENDEN

Published: September 26, 2004

A sweeping voter registration campaign in heavily Democratic areas has added tens of thousands of new voters to the rolls in the swing states of Ohio and Florida, a surge that has far exceeded the efforts of Republicans in both states, a review of registration data shows.

The analysis by The New York Times of county-by-county data shows that in Democratic areas of Ohio - primarily low-income and minority neighborhoods - new registrations since January have risen 250 percent over the same period in 2000. In comparison, new registrations have increased just 25 percent in Republican areas. A similar pattern is apparent in Florida: in the strongest Democratic areas, the pace of new registration is 60 percent higher than in 2000, while it has risen just 12 percent in the heaviest Republican areas.

While comparable data could not be obtained for other swing states, similar registration drives have been mounted in them as well, and party officials on both sides say record numbers of new voters are being registered nationwide. This largely hidden but deadly earnest battle is widely believed by campaign professionals and political scientists to be potentially decisive in the presidential election.

"We know it's going on, and it's a very encouraging sign," said Steve Elmendorf, deputy campaign manager for Senator John Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee. The new voters, Mr. Elmendorf said, "could very much be the difference."

There are alot of Dems here, they just need to shake off the GOP bullshitdust every now and then.

76. no, 7000 won't be enough but that's not the point
The point is that these numbers show Dems are ENERGIZED. And they will vote in record numbers this year.

Yet the pollsters pretend that nothing happens and keep oversample republicans in their polls. Memo to pollsters - SOMETHING IS happening and you will look stupid on Nov 2nd.

6. Yesterday, Senator Biden (with Senator Kerry) spoke at PA college
campuses encouraging out-of-state students to register to vote in PA as it is still up for grabs! Way to go, Joe.

It is very nail biting here in PA, but I am starting to see a few more Kerry/Edwards signs.

P.S. If you saw that a person planted a Bush sign (no pun intended, really) directly in front of a Kerry/Edwards sign along the road, would you move it?

75. I was canvassing for ACT yesterday
In Scranton, PA. We were going to Democrats houses and had some interesting conversations with a few people. One guy we talked to had been the Democratic Party Chairman in the area, or something like that. There was also an old woman nearly in tears about Iraq. One question we asked was if the person knew anybody who had lost their job in the last 3 years and almost all said yes.

9. Just as we thought!
This is why the polls, like *, are WRONG WRONG WRONG.

I have been skeptical about record voter turnout this year, only because we *always* think there should be and will be huge turnout and there never really is -- but this year it's going to happen. People are motivated.

And this is even before Michael Moore goes out on tour to register the slackers...

13. reporting this should be obligatory
every time a poll is reported, there should be a disclaimer that polls don't take this information into account.

Perceptions of who's winning and who's losing are hugely important in voters' psychology.

16. According to a local TV news report
On WNEP-TV here in NE PA yesterday voter registrations have gone through the roof causing election officials to work overtime. The reporter said this holds true throughout PA. I'd like to see some numbers about the political affiliation of those registering but they said the data won't be available until the registration period expires in October. I feel very good about this.

27. Something similarly positive I'm noticing in Las Vegas
Which is heavily Democratic. Young registration workers are in front of every grocery store and stores like Target, asking people if they are registered to vote. This began in the spring but has increased dramatically recently, to the point the registration workers are there virtually all day long.

I notice they are focusing on the stores in the lower to mid-income areas and not as much the fancy new developments north and west of Las Vegas. Also, when one person or a couple is walking past them the registration workers inquire of everyone, but if it is a stream of people they isolate the Hispanics or younger people to ask if they are registered.

This has got to be a Democratic effort because every time they ask me I'll say something like, "Sure am. And I wish I could vote one million times to evict that asshole from office." Without exception, they have responded in agreement.

36. This is the Key to this Election
My anecdote:

This weekend I am hosting a large group of out-of-town guests for a wedding; mostly an African-American family from North Carolina plus a couple from New Jersey. Every blessed soul a Dem. :)

We had a conversation about this very thing this morning: they said that people they know who have NEVER voted before -- from youngsters through people in their 40's -- have registered and plan to vote in this election.

The New Jersey husband just became a citizen is proud that this will be his first time voting. I showed the NC kids (both age 12) the cool Benny Boom MoveOn ad and they wish they could vote too.

This year's turnout WILL "Rock the Nation!" Let's win by a LANDSLIDE -- they can't steal a landslide!

On MSNBC horserace show they were just talking about blogs and such and they said that the left is more energized and that is the one thing that might tip the race.

Okay its not much but at least they are starting to finally say what we all know which is our side is mad, fired up, and ready to fight. I think they just might have to start talking about it because when Kerry wins they are all going to look real stupid if they keep projecting the other side will win.

NOT to vote on election day.

That means they are angry about the status quo. They are fed up with the way things are going.

God, I want to see Bush lose BOTH Fl and Oh. Fuck the pollsters. Fuck the pundits. Fuck the media. They can have their polls, where republicans outnumber democrats by ridiculous margins.

If this is how things are in these two states, Kerry could manage to lose WI and IA and still win quite handilly.

Voter rolls reach record high
By Steve Ramirez
Sep 24, 2004, 07:30 am

The number of registered voters in New Mexico has surpassed 1 million, a record-setting mark, according to a state elections official.

“We’ve passed the million mark for the first time ever in the state’s history,” Denise Lamb, director of the New Mexico Bureau of Elections said Thursday. “It’s a little mind-boggling when you consider that according to last U.S. census figures there were about 1.4 million people in New Mexico that are eligible to register.”

According to the 2000 U.S. census, New Mexico’s population was 1,819,046.

(snip)

Lamb said county clerks throughout the state have been especially busy in recent days processing all of the new voter registrations.
“We’ve been busy, very busy,” said Doña Ana County Clerk Rita Torres. “We’re getting people coming in here in waves. We’ll get a rush of people, and then it calms down, and then it starts up again.”
