They've been whining that Kerry's statement -- that he'd be able to get troops pulled back within four years by SUCCEEDING THERE -- is irresponsible because it "gives the enemy a timeline, tells them if they just hold on long enough we'll leave," blah blah blah...

So now they're saying they'd leave next year, no matter WHAT the situation in Iraq?!! So you just change the definition of "victory" and let everybody else in the world clean up the mess.

Is there evidence of this secret plan, or where is Novak getting it?

:wtf:

3. I think Rummy said something similar yesterday
This would be a HUGE flip-flop from "as long as it takes" and all that "stay the course, resolute, won't shake our will" crap.

6. That sounds right
Otherwise I couldn't imagine how they'd be leaking and hinting at this.

I think you're right that they're dropping it here and there on purpose.

5. True, but from it seems they aren't even pretending to have a plan
for success. Just "it won't be PERFECT, but we'll leave anyway."

8. Yes and your point?
If many gullible people buy into this and they get elected, they can change their tune again...

10. Even Nixon *pretended* to have a plan
They're just saying "cut and run," after criticizing Kerry's "succeed and leave" and preaching being "resolute and steadfast."

I guess you're right that some voters will buy into whichever they prefer, though. Some could say, "Good, BushCo will get us out." Others could say, "Good, BushCo will stay the course." (And still others will say, "BushCo is an unmitigated disaster with no clue what it's doing.")

7. I suspect, because this...
... started right about the time that Kerry announced a long-term plan of several years to fix Iraq, that Novak is participating in a disinformation campaign (in much the way Safire did for Nixon with regard to the Vietnam war).

Immediately sounds much more attractive than years, and so this news spreads around with Bush never having to confirm or deny anything. If he were to be elected, he can always say, "I never said that." Still, the voters believe Bush is going to remove the troops sooner than Kerry, thus convincing them to vote for Bush, against their best judgment.

It's more smoke and mirrors. Novak ought to expect a paycheck from the administration (or at least the RNC) for what he writes.

9. If reporters had any balls, they would ask Bush...
Many Republicans are saying you will cut and run from Iraq in 2005. Is that true Mr. pResident?

11. Novak is saying pull out win or lose. I think that encourages insurgents
more. They will hear that and think all they have to do is hold out till 2005. They don't even have to win. Kerry's position is that we will prevail in four years. How does telling the insurgents in Iraq that we will beat them in 4 years encourage them to hold out more than telling them to hold on till next year and we will leave. Only in bizarro world does that make sense.

12. If Bush started saying "Behead your children"
the news media would probably be at fault for the loss of a generation of freepers.

"George Bush's new plan to save Social Security for the retirees . . ."

13. A lame duck doesn't need a "victory." Bush has other countries
to attack. Period. Four more years = four more wars.

17. Novak has been spreading this for a few days now.
I'm surprised no one has asked him for his source. Maybe that's because Novak doesn't reveal his sources. nyuk, nyuk.
