1. I thought he talked about it this morning.
I did not hear him say specifically "BCCI" but he was talking about it.

People don't know about this!!!

This will change everyone's vote!!!!

3. Never, I hope.
It's time to talk about TODAY'S problems, not 30 yr. old issues.

Hopefully, the Vietnam BS taught the Kerry campaign to look ahead instead of behind.

5. BCCI is less than 15 years old
and it involved dismantling a terrorist network!!!

I swung my dad's vote on this single issue alone! Everyone's main worry is that Kerry is weak on terror. This proves that he is NOT!!

How odd.

4. BCCI is "too complex" for campaign sloganeering.
I mean, most of us at DU know and understand about BCCI and how much Kerry actually knows about terrorist organizations.

But after going back and reviewing the BCCI stuff, I'm not convinced it is a workable angle for him to showcase what he did and what he can do.

If they kind find a way to distill it down to a manageable piece of info, then I say great, do it.

And the other poster is right, he did mention it today.

10. "John Kerry was fighting terrorism as far back as 1987."
He had the imagination and the WILL to persevere in the battle when all kinds of pressures were put on him to stop.
There's nothing all that complicated about it.

6. Too complicated for Joe WalMart to wrap his head around
When you get into this stuff, their eyes glaze over, and that is when you get the "Yeah, but all politicians are crooked" crap. Bush has done so many illegal things that are not complicated, so Kerry should confuse the electorate further.

Just a handful of votes to put Kerry-Edwards back in the TOP 10

8. When, WHEN is the media going to talk about it?!?!?!?!
It's there, it's part of Kerry's history, it's part of the nation's--no, make that the WORLD's-- history. If we had a real press corps, they would have revisited the BCCI thing months ago...as part of their non-partisan portrait in depth of a presidential candidate. I agree that this story should be told. His campaign will have to bring it out, of course, because we can no longer depend on the press to DO ITS JOB.

12. Funny, this AM I woke up with this debate scene
Edited on Fri Sep-24-04 12:53 PM by Gloria
playing in my head....

Bush has just droned on about how only HE can fight terror...

Kerry then says to him: "Well, back in 1985 when I was uncovering all the money-laundering for terrorists being done by your buddies at BCCI.....etc etc.

Moderators then poop in their pants...

15. that's waht I am hoping
As soon as Kerry gets attacked about being weak on terror at the debates, he brings up BCCI, and slams the argument down. We just have to hope the commentators talk about it afterwards. I hope the DNC faxes the info about BCCI to the news outlets beforehand.

16. He did mention it this morning
in his speech at Temple University. Not by name, but most folks wouldn't recognize it anyway. From the speech:

"Third, as president, I will wage a war on terrorist finances every bit as total as the war we wage on the terrorists themselves. We will trace terrorist funds to their sources and freeze the assets of anyone -- any person, bank, business or foreign official -- who is financing terrorism. I know how to do this. As Senator, I exposed and helped dismantle an international bank that was one of the early financiers of terrorism. We did it by following the money. We can and must do the same to choke off the dollars that are funding al Qaeda and its allies. On this, I will grant no one a "free pass.”

20. It would be hard to reconcile with his vote for Negroponte.
You know, John "Death Squad Fan #1!" Negroponte? Current "ambassador" to Iraq? Part of Iran-Contra?

Kerry voted for him to become U.N. ambassador.

How does he reconcile that vote with what he knows about Negroponte through his own investigations into BCCI?

24. Just one of his many screw-ups
He should have voted NO, or just not even bother to show up. Every time he votes for something that could be used against Bush, he basically innoculates Bush from that line of attack.

26. It's not even that it can be used against b*sh. It's who Negroponte is.
The guy allowed death squads to operate with impunity. He is literally a fascist murderer, even if his own hands are unsullied by physical bloodshed.

That Kerry voted for this monster - for a man he helped investigate for criminal offenses - stunned me, and still does. I can't understand it. And no one's even tried to explain it away. I don't think it can be explained away.

22. Could someone provide me with...
1. A one line "gotcha" teaser for Iran/Contra, and BCCI.

2. A short, one or two paragraph overview of what he did, and why it matters.

3. Credible links I can provide so people can go read more in-depth coverage on each subject.

I want to spread this around other message boards, but I'm just learning about this stuff myself, and I need something to begin with.

Talking points! I need Talking points!

25. Here's a GREAT article concerning Kerry's bust of the terrorists' bank.

You will be SO proud to be supporting Kerry after you read it. Then print it out and SPREAD IT AROUND.

27. That is a great article!
I came across that about a month ago and *thought* the mainstream media might actually report it (okay, okay, I can still be naive).

But, in the meantime, I have e-mailed it around and given out hard copies of it. Sometimes I say, "I won't bother you again if you promise to read this!"

It is a challenge to condense into a sound bite, though. And I think there will have to be some bit of news that connects to it for the story to get any real attention.

29. During the first debate is the perfect time
"Mr. President, in 1988 I began an investigation of a bank called BCCI. You may have read about it in the papers.

(We're trying to pretend here that Bush actually read newspapers then, at least the oil news.)

"In 1990 we closed that bank down. It was the most crooked bank in the world. It was run by crooks and all of its customers were crooks--men like Manuel Noriega, Abu Nidal and Osama bin Laden banked there.

"Apparently they also financed the oil industry. A company called Harken Oil was one of its customers too. Weren't you on the Harken board of directors in 1986, when Harken took out its BCCI loan?"

31. His Speech At Temple Talked About It
although not by name.

I believe that is a strategic decision, so it rolls out at the right time. After all the crap about having no Senate record, people will hear in October about all that he has done.
