Keep asking Dean for a middle class tax cut
Edited on Fri Jan-09-04 10:01 AM by Eric J in MN
There have been rumors lately that Dean may offer a middle-class tax cut.

Please help the Dean campaign to keep moving in that direction by contacting them with this form.

http://www.deanforamerica.com/site/cg/index.html?type=page&pagename=resources_contact

Some proposals:

1) Currently, the Social Security tax only applies to income below $87,000.

If instead the Social Security tax applied to all income, the rate could be lowered and MORE revenue could be raised.

2) The top income bracket rate could be increased and the lowest bracket rate lowered.

1. Eric
Part of the rumor is that Dean's proposal will focus on payroll taxes. I think your #1 may be likely.

12. grrrrr my PET PEEVE
the "payroll tax" is NOT a tax!!!!!!!! it used to be called fica, the i of which stands for INSURANCE. the social security system is not a government welfare program, supported by taxes. it is a government run insurance program, supported by premiums. if you die or are disabled before you reach 65, it pays disability or survivors benefits. your eventual payouts depend on your premiums. there is a max on the premiums, because there is a max on the payouts. if you want to lift the max on the payouts, fine, lift the max on the premiums. but you will be able to hear the howling all the way to the MOON when rich people start getting social security checks that are in the 5 figures. otherwise DO NOT FUCK WITH THIS FUNCTIONING REMAINDER OF THE NEW DEAL!!!! and by the way- the cap on this tax is RAISED EVERY YEAR, with out fail, and without a word in the press. 15 years ago, the cap was about 50k, now it is 80k.
this is my one and only beef with molly ivins, and jim hightower. makes me want to throw a pie.

Nothing is definite yet. That is why people who want a middle-class tax cut plan which raises taxes on the rich for more revenue overall should contact the Dean campaign with the form at:

5. both your proposals are great, I hope Dean adopts them
We can fix SS easily by removing the cap, and we can help working families by minimizing their tax burden, and make sure we don't bust the budgets (like the Republicans do) by taxing the rich.

8. Dropping the cap adds 6.2% to all tax brackets above $88k...
I think it's going to have to be much more creative than that.

Dean's position seems to be to first repeal all the Bush tax-cuts, and then do something to make the tax-code more fair.

10. Sorry but this makes Dean look clueless and out of touch
real Democrats who genuinely look out for the middle and lower class don't need to be told how to structure the tax burden.

16. Exactly. This issue proves that Dean is out of touch with the middle class
Kerry, Edwards and Kucinich (Clark now too) have understood that middle class families cannot handle an increase right now. Kerry has argued this fact with Howard over and over and been smeared as Bush=Lite for taking this stand to protect families like mine. I make me genuinely angry that I have argued this point and Kerry has argued this point and been trashed and NOW Dean can just see the political ramifications and say, okay should I change my mind.

YOU EITHER BELIEVE WE SHOULD PROTECT THE MIDDLE CLASS OR NOT.

-The equivocation here just shows you that Dean does not understand families like mine. That he could make political decision with our well being makes me furious.

15. i would be interested to know how
middle class is being defined. middle class seems to be disappearing to me with more and more people becoming 'working poor'..the professionals (lawyers, doctors) used to be considered the part of the higher classes..i think they are the new middle class..am i wrong? i make almost 50,000.00 a year...my husband makes just a bit less than that..are we middle class? if so, where is my tax cut or is dean right when he says 'what middle class tax cut?'

17. You fall into that class depending on where you live
Also deoends where you live. If yo lived where I do, where property value is excessivley over valued you would live a middle class life.

If you have children you got at least 400 for each child. If you are married you got got the difference between single and married. I also think your rate may have gone down.

You ask the wrong question here. The point is not, "is dean right when he says 'what middle class tax cut?'", because depending on where you live you expenses went up and any cut you got probably offset higher expenses.

The point is that 1)we have to fix Bus mess 2)no policy implemented will bring down expenses right away 3) families will continue to have those higher expenses when Dean takes away the amount they did get.

Kerry has been fighting Dean in every debate that we had to protect the middle class and all Dean said was that Kerry was supporting Bush and that his assertions were a myth. Dean clearly doesn't get my family. Kerry understands us. That matters to me.

I don't like sharing my personal finances, but I will say that we get at least a thousand a year. We need that money. Without it, we will have to put those expenses on credit card. By the time I can pay it off, it could be $3,000. I hate that I need the money Bush's tax cuts gave, but we do. I hate Bush for making me need his handouts since it was the other end of the tax cut that caused my need.

Everyone's rates were lowered in the Bush tax cut. Also, people with children under 17 went from a credit of $600/child to $1000/child.

19.  Too late. He's already stated he's against the tax cuts passed
the last two years. Secondly, he changed his "commitment" to campaign finance reform.

So I think that no matter what he says at this point, if he should win the GE by some miracle, he'd do his best to do away w/the tax cuts, like he has said for two years he would.

A ploy to get votes doesn't fool me.

When he speaks (like in Iowa just now) he's so vague I can't
tell what his policies are.
