The rising rates of unemployment could imperil the Obama Presidency: A ticking time bomb

Once again for the hard of seeing the truth.

The Nation's Washington, D.C. Correspondent, John Nichols, explains how the rising rates of unemployment could imperil The Obama Presidency.

Will Unemployment Sink the Obama Agenda?
The Nation
July 17, 2009

Nation Washington correspondent John Nichols likens the recession to a ticking time bomb that has been handed to Barack Obama to defuse. "If the bomb blows up, he'll be blamed. He's Bruce Willis now, he's got the bomb, and he hasn't taken it apart yet." Nichols notes that the tipping point for America is often double digit unemployment, and that the higher those numbers go, the more frightened Americans get. This is why, he says, America needs a second stimulus bill, and its focus has to be on job creation. Obama's political future depends on it.

2. People need to be reminded who is responsible for this situation.
It isn't Obama, and it isn't the Democrats.

(Hint to Democrats: Repeat daily until absorbed.)

4. That does not matter to more and more people.
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 02:27 PM by Craftsman
The dems were elected to change that, if it does not get better but keeps getting worse 2010 will be a blood bath.

5. That is not going to fly much longer.........
........believe me, I was out of work for 5 months and I don't care if Bush or Obama is/was to blame. They need to focus, focus, focus, on creating the environment for job creation. Put off cap-n-trade, cancel the health care overhaul (as if congress has the intelligence), and put the unused "stimulus" money towards small-business tax relief.

15. Some polls are showing otherwise.
Edited on Fri Nov-06-09 03:17 PM by Jennicut
"Here’s a somewhat surprising result from the new Fox News poll. Asked which president is “more responsible for the current state of the economy,” only 18 percent say President Obama. Fifty-eight percent say former President George W. Bush. Nine percent blame both of them. Republicans are the only subgroup of voters who blame Obama, and only by a six-point margin of 35 percent to 29 percent.

What’s striking about this is that the numbers have only marginally gotten worse for President Obama in the three months since Fox News last asked this question. In July, it was 16 percent who blamed Obama and 61 percent who blamed Bush. That is, needless to say, not what Fox News viewers hear when they tune into the network. But it’s essential to understanding why the president remains popular and why Republicans are failing to really capitalize on economic gloom."

I think Gallup had something similar to this # not too long ago. I am looking for that poll right now. This poll above is a Faux poll of all things, too.

19. I see the numbers........
........and maybe you are right, but I don't see how it lasts till the 2010 elections and beyond to 2012. At some point people are going to insist on action from the current administration. It's going to be a long, cold, Winter for all the unemployed including maybe me (I'm on an IT contract basis).

We have more shoes to drop, including a gigantic Commercial RE overhang, and different kinds of adjustable mortages (not the original sub-prime, but equally dangerous). I think Bush and his financial folks should get most of the blame, but the same financial team is now onboard with Obama, WTF?

This has been a long time coming and spans the Reagan, Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and now Obama administrations. YOU CAN'T HAVE AN ECONOMY WHERE I WALK YOUR DOG SO YOU PAY ME SO I CAN BUY A CUP OF OVERPRICED COFFEE AT YOUR FRANCHISE!! We need to produce real goods and be energy independent and this has been going the wrong direction for 30 years!

Pointing fingers looks weak after the first couple times you do it. For example, If I start a job as a programmer and come in and say 'The old code is totally f**ked', fine, my new boss will give me some time to fix it. And as a professional, that is what I will try my best to do. But I can't keep blaming the old departed programmer forever.

This WILL come home to roost - like that buzzard in the cartoon who says, 'Patience, my ass, I'm gonna kill something!'

8. Fixing the economy would have been #1 on my list of priorities...
...but I'm going to push the I believe button and trust Obama until proven otherwise. The only reason I can think of for not addressing the economy first would be so that, by the time the 2012 election season rolls around, the economy will be making a comeback (Probably by then a strong one), and the news on that front will be good. Although we'll still probably be in massive debt, good economic numbers will usually win out over deficit numbers. I hope it's not the case, but I can't think of any other reason why.

How could this be unless the democratic party was bought and paid for by special interest and of course being spineless.

18. There is no long term fixing of the economy if they don't do something
about health care. That's just a fact.

American companies cannot compete with the rest of the industrialized world, and small businesses cannot complete with big businesses until this issue is resolved. The high premiums to attract good workers are killing them. So they continue to outsource. The more they have to pay for health care, the fewer people they can afford to hire in this country. Bye bye jobs.

America is not on an even playing field. Corporations in every other industrialized country are being subsidized with government paid health care. Yet we are expected to continue to play by their rules.

These asshat Teabaggers might as well as get used to working in the fields picking vegetables because they are helping to turn this into a 3rd world country with their garbage. Let freedom ring. They can use it as an alarm clock to wake them up at 5 a.m. to get out to the fields.

22. Going back to pushing the "I Believe" button...
...that's probably true. But I'm not an economist, so I can't say. And I don't pay for health care (I'm in the military), so I can't speak to those types of problems.

11. Could, but won't.
Thanks for the negative speculative piece!
Everyone and their mother has an opinion on Barack Obama,
and if it reflects with a negative one, we can be sure that you will post it,
cause after all, making us feel that OBama is a failure is after all
your self appointed position here at DU.....

So thanks for all of your hard work, in making sure that
self fulfilling prophecies in talking down the work of the President is doing
each and everyday comes true.

You are doing a swell "Job"! :hi:

14. What I believe is that certain people don't want to see this Pres succeed,
or the Democratic party succeed, or the American people succeed,
and you are one of those.

Everything else you say means nothing....
cause at the end of the day,
you have no alternative action to offer
that could be done now and change everything....
only blanket criticisms without even providing a shred of statistical evidence
to back up your continued negative point, of how everyone is on the take,
and everything is fucked.

In otherwords, you talk a lot,
but you have no viable realistic solutions that could be implemented as we speak.....
just an ability to say what could happen in a perfect world,
if everything would align as you imagined it.

You are the one in denial of any reality;
and how one navigates through what is,
as opposed to what should be if you had your way.
