And why are they such a big deal?

Keep the bloodletting to a minimum. I just mopped the floor. Thanks.

4. Apparently
MSNBC ran a segment about some Canadian show that Dean did for a few years.

He said that the IA caucuses were controlled by special interests on both sides.

It's got everyone up in arms except the people who participate in IA caucuses.

"Yet he also shows that he’s much more consistent on issues — like affirmative action and trade — than some of his opponents give him credit for. And despite the constant complaints that Dean has no foreign policy experience, he demonstrates a good grasp of international affairs."

Good stuff.

I'm surprised at Olbermann for getting so breathy about this. I thought he was one of the few TV guys with a brain in his head. Hm.

.... here's the direct MSNBC link:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3908334/

and here's a pretty interesting GD2004 thread on the "incident:"

Breaking: Deans past views. Editted (sic) to Yahoo.

I think the entire affair is pretty snoozeworthy in the realm of "October-surprise-variety" campaign scandals. What he says about the Iowa caucus system was as accurate then as it is now, relatively, but he does go on to say that Al Gore isn't "quick on his feet" (I think all's forgiven now; move on). He also said something about Hamas that is honestly entirely irrelevent today, although the comment about Arafat ("the next great tragedy is going to be Arafat's passing, believe it or not") is rather unfortunate in any context, politically.

Always hoping to be helpful,
;-)

53. Most of the quotes they showed on the news were great for Dean
I guess dissing the Iowa caucuses was a "whoops," although it hardly seemed like a big deal to me.

But the tapes also showed him strongly defending affirmative action and telling a conservative who claimed that 80% of single mothers end up on welfare that that was "absolute crap." Works for me.
