Now that a public option is on the verge of passing, Senator Kyl suddenly wants to compromise

Kyl prefers opt-in over opt-out

By J. Taylor Rushing and Tony Romm

Senate GOP Whip Jon Kyl (Ariz.) on Tuesday said he supports the idea of allowing states to decide whether to opt in to a publicly run health plan.

Kyl told The Hill he remains opposed to the Senate Democrats’ plan, which is being scored by the Congressional Budget Office. The bill would establish the option in states but allow them to opt out.

The GOP whip said he prefers letting states decide whether to join instead of their being put in automatically. He said he didn’t know if he would offer the idea as an amendment during the floor debate that is expected to start within days.

“I agree that states should have the option to opt in,” Kyl said. “But I don’t even know if they have this provision written yet,” he said. “I certainly haven’t seen it.”

Kyl’s statement could offer the seeds of a compromise with Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), though a bipartisan accord is unlikely. States could opt out of the public plan before 2014.

Screw Republicans.

You effing moron.

You had your chance to compromise over the summer. You failed. You're irrelevant.

Bye.

5. Too late, asshat.
You had a chance to be part of the debate, to include any ideas you may have had.

We are going to get a health bill, with a public option, and there will be nothing you can do to stop it.

And having an 'opt-out' clause is the biggest Trojan Horse that the Democrats could ever build. It will destroy the Republican opposition to health care at the state level.

They would oppose health care for their constituents *one* time. Then they would be swept from office.

11. Reid and the Democrats have always maintained reconciliation is on the table. Remember
that language is included in Obama's budget. Also, no one knows what else Reid has up his sleeve.

12. Meanwhile, Republicans will take their opening
Handed it right to them. I suspect that the rumor that the administration warned that this was "dangerous" and counseled against it was true.
