Will Carly Fiorina officially announce her bid to become California’s next U.S. senator next Friday? Signs point that way.
A San Francisco Bay area group called the Tri-Valley Business Council sent out an email last week, inviting people to hear the former Hewlett-Packard CEO make a “very important” announcement at a Nov. 6 event in Pleasanton, Calif. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the council’s president expects her to announce her candidacy there.
But her spokeswoman, Beth Miller, played coy.
“I think it’s an unfair characterization that the main campaign announcement is going to be Friday in Pleasanton,” Miller told Washington Wire. “Carly has a pretty busy schedule next week with a lot of events. … She will definitely be discussing, as she has said all along, that she has been taking the decision of whether she’s going to run or not under seriously consideration.”
The 55-year-old Republican has been mentioned as a potential Senate candidate since serving as a top adviser to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign last year. She took her first step toward entering the race in August, forming an exploratory committee through which she has been raising funds.
Since then, she’s been criticizing Sen. Barbara Boxer, whom she would face in the November 2010 general election if she defeats Republican state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore in the GOP primary. So far, Fiorina has been all but ignoring DeVore and going after Boxer.
