So...let's do the math and see how this would help us close the spending gap relative to other nations.

We currently spend $7290 yearly, per capita, compared to the French($3,601).

With Tort Reform, the new numbers would be:

U.S. $7254
France: $3,601

Hurray! We can buy a t-shirt with that money! Every year!

1. Eh.
IF, if if if if, it got us some Republican votes, and IF it came with a good, expansive, universal public option, then I'd be willing to give on tort reform. But only under those conditions.

3. Exactly. This has nothing to do with protecting doctors
And everything to do with taking the courts away from you and me. They picked medical tort reform to start because doctors are held in such high esteem in this country. Once they limit your ability to win awards from medical mistakes the floodgates will open. "Contaminated food tort reform" and "Dangerous products tort reform" will be next.

4. I dunno
I'm a lawyer and the fear of a malpractice suit is a good motivator. I wouldn't want doctors released from this. What good would it do? It would make it easier to be lax and let mistakes happen.

Never saw why people would want to close the courts to themselves for actual negligence.
