1. Is that from a Dem official?
Because I have no doubt that any Dem who votes to filibuster SHOULD lose their chairmanships, but I definitely have doubts as to whether they will.

It should be Smitsonianized!

I think I may write old Harry tomorrow with the following....

When a problem comes along
You must whip it
Before the cream sits out too long
You must whip it
When something's going wrong
You must whip it

And whip it good!

He may have to get someone to explain it to him though.

13. That is not the same as Reid making the statement. "Two major powerbrokers
on the left have told MSNBC "does not sound like "Senator Reid has stated...."

14. I think they will be OK with the Senator voting against the bill, as long as they don't filibuster
The dems have at least 50 votes, and if it comes down to it, Biden will vote for the bill.

.... I found it while Googleing support for Rachel's claim..... quite funny. They're are almost as excited about as we are .... it's like that scene where the Jets and Sharks meet under the highway in West Side Story (har har.)

Or maybe the MJ's "Beat It" video. :)

22. Thanks. This response was reasonable:
"Well, this is a critical vote for them. Revoking committee chairs for party members who vote the wrong way on critical votes was S.O.P. for years.

The question is, how come only the Democrats do it? Why is Olympia Snowe still on all those committees? Why hasn’t she been moved to the basement of the Senate office building?

It seems as if the Democrats understand Politics 101, if nothing else."

(But I doubt the part I put in bold is true.)

23. Well, there's this....
.... to further complicate matters, it has to do with Evan Bayh's 12/08 threat to strip Lieberman of his charimanship (remember that?) ....... apparently, that can only be done via a Senate resolution which ALSO can be filibustered!!! lol

http://www.congressmatters.com/story/2008/12/9/198/-Dont-know-how-I-missed-this-one...

This is TOO fun/funny.

26. So that means it can't happen
No Republican will vote for cloture and the one losing their chair will not vote for cloture.

.... if it involves taking out a powerful Dem rival .... literally taking them from their seat of power?

Oh ...... this whole thing is giving me a headache! lol

28. Another Democrat will take that chair - maybe one they would like less
Edited on Wed Oct-07-09 10:06 PM by karynnj
and they would say they would do it to make the plan undoable until the next Congress, when the committees are redone. So, the threat would be losing the chair in 2010 after the election, which is less immediate.

In addition, the ones threatened are not the Democrats they would like to lose their committees - ie Kerry, Dodd, Leahy, Schumer or their leadership positions (Reid, Durbin) it would be ones like LIncoln, the Nelsons etc.

24. This shouldn't even be a "strategy"... just political reality
It should go without saying that if a Democrat filibusters with the GOP that they lose any benefits they get from being part of the caucus. It's one thing to vote differently on certain issues or because one doesn't like a particular bill but to break ranks and join a GOP filibuster? Anyone who does that needs to be sent packing.

No indication whether the leadership is supporting that.
