How can bombing the moon be a good thing?

5.  I don't like it and I just am
hoping that it doesn't do any damage to our Solar System. That may sound stupid but I don't care..People have messed up the Earth badly enough and now they're taking shots at the Moon. I read on that thread that it won't do any harm and I so hope they're right.

27. There is no "bomb", it's a stupid headline. They are having unmaned probes crash into the moon to...
...kick up some water.

7. It's a WONDERFUL thing
They should ahve done it decades ago.

We'll learn more from one explosion than we've learned in all the time prior to that explosion.

12. arghhh!
how can they see anything with all those lights and flashes on them?! It gets in the way of viewing thru the telescope. I know it's a photo-op and all, but what they really need is a star party at Camp David where the brightest lights come from the stars -- now that's a star party!

13. Thank you for the great photos, Jackeens
To be fair, one can't even see the Milky Way from the city. Next time Obama should have the star party at Camp David. Dark skies are good!

14. Ah, funny you should mention city skies...
I spent three weeks in the middle of nowhere this summer (ie on an island off the north-west coast of Ireland) and just about every night, perhaps after a wine too many, I would say: "OH ****, LOOK - UFOS!!!!" And my cousin, from up there, would reply: "You big feckin' eejit, they're stars".

That's when I realised I really needed to move out of the city, I never see the stars any more, apart from Bono and Colin Farrell falling out of pubs the odd time.

a few miles from the McDonald Observatory. Not a soul in sight. The observatory has a star party program. They get thousands of visitors every year.

25. i worked there one summer as a telescope operator ... in 1985
it is an incredibly beautiful place. That bottom photo is the 82 inch telescope, where i spent most nights. i really love that old telescope.

On moonless nights, the stars shone so bright that i could read a book by the starlight -- i am not kidding -- and the starlight was bright enough to cast shadows. On nights like that, i didn't need a flashlight to walk about the observatory grounds. It was utterly exhilarating.

23. I was thinking they really should have turned out the lights.
I hope they did after the photo op, especially for the girls. Even in the city it would have improved the viewing a hundredfold.
