The former Miami mayor who met with supporters in Orlando's Puerto Rican community earlier this month said he is "seriously considering" a run for the U.S. Senate seat from Florida.
Maurice Ferré said he is leaning that way after conducting polling to study his prospects and meeting with backers in different parts of the state.
Ferré, 74, is a Democrat and was the first Puerto Rico native elected mayor of a large U.S. city in 1973. He told the Orlando Sentinel's Hispanosphere that he believes his experience and track record would give him an advantage in the race to replace former Senator Mel Martinez.
Another Democrat, Miami Congressman Kendrick Meek, is already running for the position. On the Republican side, Gov. Charlie Crist is facing a challenge from former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio. The seat has been temporarily filled by the appointed Senator George LeMieux, a Crist ally.
